Read this in a single day. Couldn’t put it down, was entirely captivated by The Girl’s journey. As another reviewer on here said: it’s a survival story, not an adventure story.
Also, this book made my anxious heart feel genuinely okay about death. Stunning.

"To be alone and surviving is not the same as being alive, she understood."
It was okay. If you enjoyed this, I would recommend "The Marriage Portrait" or "Hamnet" by Maggie O'Farrell, "Circe" by Madeline Miller, or maybe "The Witch's Heart" by Genevieve Gornichec. The Vaster Wilds is a book about all we are willing to endure to live. I spent a lot of the book thinking about how my will to live is probably lucky I was born in this century and not anything prior. It also made me think about how I would like to reread "Hatchet" by Gary Paulson. I do enjoy books about people foraging and living in the woods, but I don't really enjoy books about suffering and dying in the woods. The most interesting part of the book is her dying considerations of colonialism, and how the English destroyed the Americas. There isn't much time spent on this, however.
I would recommend this to anyone who has considered how long they would last in the case of a zombie apocalypse, those of us who prefer hotels to camping, and to folks who play out full alternative realities in their minds.

Not one for those that need the drive of plot or for the squeamish, but drive forward it does anyway. Reads like a horror tale in the fight to survive at home and abroad…and certainly had me flinching. Great writing of course.

Inches beyond this face of hers and in the profoundest suffering of her body, the world went on in its grand and renewing and wholly indifferent beauty (Geoff 250).
Like Groff’s last novel, this is a work of historical fiction that centers a strong female protagonist facing a multitude of external threats, many attributed to men.
The interiority of this narrative makes it feel like a retreat for the reader, as the young, starved protagonist retreats from the Jamestown colony.
I love Groff’s way with words.
