I so wanted to love this book, I've always been a huge fan of music, and I think most people
have that deep down wonder of what would happen if their first love ever came back into the picture, would the past stay in the past or would the pull be irresistible?
Unfortunately I didn't get quite what I wanted. I loved Alison and Dan together, and gradually finding out what happened to them in the past was both nostalgic and emotional, but I think the author did too good a job making you not care about their current partners, who were both simultaneously boring and obnoxious, so a lot of the present day story was pretty dull until close to the end.

This book started off so well but by the end of it I was nothing short of completely irritated by the characters and the author.
It alternates a narrative between 1970’s Sheffield and 2012/13 Edinburgh and Adelaide, with two characters who were a couple in the 70’s and who find themselves communicating via Twitter messages from either side of the planet in modern times.
The young Dan & Alison were fun, interesting, naive and enjoyable characters, and it was enjoyable reading their relationship blossom. However the Dan and Alison of modern times were selfish, egotistical and lacked a serious depth of character.
Th author tackles some really serious issues in this novel - when I say tackles I mean she gives them a brief mention and that’s it. Sexual assault, eating disorders and miscarriage are discussed and dealt with in such a blase way it left a serious bad taste in my mouth.
Overall, a good idea for a book but the characters bored and irritated me and I feel that the author shouldn’t be tackling such serious issues unless she handles them with care and dignity.
Would not read more by this author.

Too predictable. Didn't enjoy the plot and too slow
Let me start by stating that this is one of my favourite books I have read this year. I adored it.
Although it is billed as a romance book and the cover suggests a light read, I feel that this is slightly misleading. This books deals with a lot of trauma, such as alcoholism, rape and suicide. If you go in expecting a fun light read, this is not that, and in my opinion all the better for it.
The novel follows two people during two time lines – one in 1979 and the other in 2012/13. In the later timeline both are in their late forties, have other partners and adult children and yet they find their way back to each other, reconnecting through music that they send to each other via Twitter. I loved having older protagonists that still felt young at heart. I guess I recognised much of myself in them!
It does deal with adultery, which is not a subject I am particularly fond of, but somehow it works here and it did not bother me too much.
I loved the main characters, as well as the quirky cast of side characters. There were some really endearing dynamics.
I loved the big role the music aspect played in this narrative. Music is very evocative for me personally, so for me this novel made a lot of sense and I felt wave after wave of nostalgia whilst reading it.
I adored this so much. This was perfect for me.

A beautifully written book about first loves and finding each other again after so many years, of picking up from where you let off all those years ago like nothing had changed at all.
Jane Sanderson has weaved a magical tale between the two main characters, both from their teen years through to their adult lives and their relationships.
Everyone has that first love that never really leaves your mind, no matter whether you have thought about them in years. You always end up wondering about the 'what if's' of those past years, of those 'What could it have been like' if you had stayed together.
Mix Tape kind of covers all of those thoughts and feelings as well as covering all the in between, including the other people in their lives, of navigating through the hurts that they leave behind in their wake of finding their true happiness, something which everyone deserves to have in their lives.

Mix Tape was a wonderful, truly heart-warming story. It was a little confusing at first, switching from Sheffield in the 1970s to Australia in 2012/13, but once I got over this I saw how it really helped the story to flow and developed the characters perfectly.
At times, the story felt a bit slow and I wasn't as engaged at those moments, but the last third of the book was incredibly fast-paced and exciting so it definitely made up for these moments.
I'd be sure to recommend to my friends that are fans of young adult books and easy-going love stories because it perfectly fits these categories. I think I'd be excited to see a sequel to Mix Tape one day!
