Most star wars books have too many POVs, but oh my god this book really suffers for it, especially at the start. Hard to follow along with esp at the start, but once it got into it it was solidly good

(but then cut through tension by swapping POVs and spoiling either the plot or the vibe)

This reminded me a bit of the X-Wing series in the old EU, but only in that it follows a scrappy squadron of fighter pilots. This is one of the more military sci-fi titles in the new Star Wars canon (along with the Battlefront novels and the new Thrawn books), so readers who enjoy that genre will probably like this one.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, though a lot of new characters are introduced in the beginning and I had trouble keeping track of them all. To be fair, I just had surgery and was on narcotic painkillers when I started, so that very well could have played a role in my difficulty.

The audio book wasn't read by Mark Thompson or January Lavoy, but I still enjoyed the audio version. Another solid entry in the new Star Wars canon!

"She couldn't tell if it was night or day. The swirling, iridescent storm looked like an oily whirlpool, blotting out sun or stars or both. It churned and grew, visibly expanding moment by moment. Glimmering above the white lightning, faint and high, were the orange lights of atmospheric explosions: the payloads of other TIE fighters."

The Alphabet Squadron is the first book in the trilogy by Alexander Freed & I dug it a lot!

The Emperor has died & chaos ensues.

Set after Return of the Jedi, Alphabet Squadron follows a motley crew of New Republic pilots, each flying their own different class of starfighter.

Brought together to end the brutal war by my beloved Hera Syndulla, former pilot of the Ghost (Star Wars Rebels), who is now leading an entire fleet of ships, including the Alphabet Squadron:

Yrica Quell, an X-wing pilot, formerly in the Shadow Wing, now leader of the Alphabet Squadron; Wyl Lark, a young, talented A-wing pilot; Kairos, a quiet, mysterious U-wing pilot; Nath, a bitter scoundrel who pilots a Y-wing; and Chass na Chadic, a rebellious music lover that flies a B-wing & is fascinated with Jyn Erso.

Freed tends to showcase the darker side of the galaxy in his writing while beautifully crafting exciting space combat & nuanced characters. I truly believe he is one of the best out there writing Star Wars right now (he also wrote the Rogue One novelization, which is my favorite EVER!)

Alexander Freed is the Joe Abercrombie of Star Wars, in my humble opinion! And you know that means a lot, coming from me! He writes a battle scene that will completely knock your space buns off!

The Force continues to provide!

I was hoping that this would be like the X-wing series that I loved so much. I had difficulty keeping the characters straight and the narrator did nothing to help that.

This is the second of the recent stars wars books I’ve read that is very dark and depressing, devoid of any fun. I had to struggle to finish this.

This book feels disjointed. I realized at the end that it is part of a trilogy, which helps explain some of the pacing and character development. But I still thought it could have been more cohesive and still left more to discover in the sequels.
