This was an incredible read. Really smart, intense, surprisingly funny at times. I was so enthralled with Ryland and Rocky’s mission, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat for the last 2/3 of the book.  Heavy on the science, but totally accessible and enjoyable.

Annoying protagonist gets in the way

I loved the story of Hail Mary. It's just as brilliant and well-conceived hard science fiction as The Martian. Unfortunately, Ryland Grace is so ebullient, he's like Mark Watney's hyperactive younger brother. He tries too hard to show us how clever he is. I was ready to give up until a new character came in 1/3 of the way into the book. That gave the audience more breathing room since Ryland could focus on the new character instead of just us, and helped me finish the otherwise satisfying story.

I initially hesitated to pick up this book because it was outside my usual genre. However, it exceeded my expectations. While there were some scientific concepts that required some extra effort for me to comprehend, the book was still captivating enough to keep me hooked throughout. The second part of the book took a surprising turn, which I didn't anticipate, but I loved Rocky and was pleased with the outcome. The ending was a bit bittersweet, but overall, I'm satisfied with how it all concluded. I highly recommend this amazing book to anyone looking for a great read.

This was a solid read but it definitely didn’t capture my interest the same as The Martian.
