*4.5 Stars* It's slow paced, but I honestly couldn't stop reading it. I appreciate jazz and love the references to some of the Jazz greats. Because I played clarinet as well, I like that I can follow along with the technical terms being spoken. I actually want to pick up the next 2 in 1 volume, because the flash forwards have me intrigued as to what Dai's journey will look like.

I find myself not wanting to rate specific manga volumes; it’s easier to think about in a “did I enjoy this series”, “would I read this series again”, “am i going to continue reading it” type of way. and it’s currently yes, i plan on continuing.
Dai’s stereotypical main character, action shoujo-esque declarations about becoming the best jazz musician would normally rankle. but, his naïveté appears alongside a very endearing earnestness and constant appreciation for the greats + other folks understandably pointing out that not only is it a bold statement to make, it’s also somewhat out of his control (i.e public reception), so it’s palatable.
the panels where Dai is realllly getting into his sax are stunning. the two full pages where we get side by side, alternating images of Dai playing impromptu at the jazz festival and the onlookers’ reactions? loved it.
