Such a great ending to this series. I knew the books would be favorites for me and they held up to that expectation. Such an incredible story. Even if it took me this long to finally read them I'm so happy I did.

Tolkien defines a genre, here, even though the four-star evidence is my personal testament to how far fantasy has come since. That is, Tolkien's worldbuilding is superb, but some of the characters do ring a little flat to me, and the pacing is... hm. Let's just say I was less than fond of the massive ending plotline about bandits and sheriffs in Hobbiton. Because we just dealt with the end of the world. I liked that bit. Can we go back there? The men of Tolkien's stories are, if not as individuals, incredibly compelling in aggregate-- the nobility of his world, the easy grace with which it turns, and the freedom the characters (especially male characters) have to express emotion and devotion to each other is touching. It's a world worth saving, which we are watching at the end of an age. Harsh, but fair. I believe Tolkien gives it a wonderful send-off.

I'm finally done!
It was definitely a journey and I enjoyed it very much.
After having grown up watching the movies finally getting to this point where I have now also read all three books feels... I'm not sure, maybe satisfying? rewarding? I can't really think of the right word, but I feel really happy right now.
I think the movies are a wonderful adaptation but the cool thing about adaptations that people often forget I feel like is that the adaption is taking place only because the original source was so good that people wanted it to get adapted. Do you know what I mean?
I love experiencing stories in different types of media. Often times the original medium (books for example) are better at telling the story, it makes sense since that's how it was conceived.
Adaptations often aren't as good at certain things, but they can excel at other things that the original medium couldn't do.
If you take books and movies for example, one obvious difference is that you can actually hear and see what is happening, hence why it’s called an audiovisual medium.
Anyway, I am getting off-track here, my point is that both are worthy of existing and are able to do things that the other can't.
Which is why I love experiencing both. Having both watched the movies and read the books now I can fully appreciate or I am able to appreciate the world and the characters more.
I got to experience both of the best parts of the movies and the books! Anyway, rant over, many other people have been able to put into words why The Lord of the Rings series is as good as it is.
So, if you have time and can and want to re-experience The Lord of the Rings (assuming you watched the movies and liked them lol) all over you should definitely try to read the books.
