What does it say about me that I absolutely loved this book about 42 students who are brought to a deserted island and are forced to kill each other? This was SO good! Very intense and entertaining from start to finish. Though I really could have done without every other character confessing their undying love to someone, but what else would you do in a situation like this, I guess.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I got 20% through the audio book and just couldn't get into the story. This seemed like it was going to be really up my alley but I just wasn't very invested in the characters.

I may have enjoyed this a lot more than I would have if I read it years ago simply because the story itself is more relevant than ever. The gratuitous death of children and the little nuggets of backstory you get from them and how they lived in their fascist regime are so poignant and interesting, I could not put this book down. I also had my finals this month, so I couldn't read as much, and this was such a treat whenever I found the time to read for leisure.

I thought this book was excellently paced, I wasn't bored even once. You know that everyone will die but it still hurts when they do. What I really made me love this book was the small references toward how their country was run. I don't remember much from the movie but I know for a fact a lot of the world building in this book was left out of the movie, most likely for the sake of brevity.

The smaller moments creating the bigger picture is what made me love this so much. Every death was gratuitous and unnecessary, which is obviously the point, and I couldn't help but think about how each death meant something. Two young lovers not being able to grow old together, the trust between friends deteriorating into nothingness, the fear that you will not be able to leave your mark on the world anymore, the fact that system that broke you is working as intended, and so much more. Despite this book being fiction, I think it does an amazing job at depicting fascism and what is in store for us in the future.
