When starting this book, I didn't realize how long it was until I got halfway through. I usually don't pay attention to page length when starting, but I ended up checking how long it was because the book moved incredibly slow and I wondered how many pages were left. Most of the text read as direct descriptions of what characters looked like and the events that were happening, which to me, made the book feel quite boring and the plot not as exciting. I ended up finishing it because I was still curious about the ending, but it was quite a trek getting through it all. Too long and lengthy for me, I wouldn't recommend this to others.

This is the better literary work, but The Hunger Games has better character work.

For fans of The Hunger Games and Red Rising.

There’s no doubt this inspired The Hunger Games. Except, it’s more raw and cut throat and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Still, I felt no particular closeness to any of the characters until the very last 3 or so, due to most of them being rather similar, and the unique ones being too mentally troubled to really identify with.

The underage sexualisation felt a little over the top, but this book is translated so I’ll give it a pass for cultural differences.

The Hunger Games spends more time creating a connection with characters and detailing why The Hunger Games actually happens and how its history affected each district.

Whereas, Battle Royale sort of says it’s like this because The Supreme Ruler says so and everyone is scared of him, even though they’ve never seen him

Love this book. Terrifying. Awful. Kiriyama is the best villain ever.
