I dug Oswald in the previous book, but not at all in this one. Generally unimpressed. I did enjoy all the moments with Roland and the dogs though!

Wow, this is how you write a spymaster hero!! I adore Oswald with all my heart, and I cannot believe what a non-entity I considered him in the first book. But of course that's probably what he wanted! And Fenella! My love!
Fenella's terrible husband decides he's going to divorce Fenella and bring back a new wife. Fenella goes to court in order to contest the divorce since she has a small amount of leverage on Lord Vawdrey who jilted her so long ago. She arrives only to find herself already divorced and Lord Vawdrey says that her papers, meant to make him help her, actually mean they've been married this whole time. With me so far? He's full of shit of course and goes to have his forger change their betrothal contract into a marriage contract! All because the king wants to foist his new mistress off as his wife and he's like NOPE. So he's rationalizing it as a good play but guess what, he comes around on Fenella staying in court with him FAST! He's also wears the locket Fenella gave him around his neck because he thought it was from his mother (after a battle-related injury almost killed him and stole some of his memories). Omg and when he hung the tapestry Fenella made for him as a gift in their rooms? My heart!
I thought the court intrigue was so well done, and Oswald had to put aside some of his controlling tendencies to make his relationship with Fenella better.
6/9/22 reread: Listened to the audiobook this time and continue to freakin' love Fenella and Oswald! Alice Coldbreath is amazing!
