Fascinating political thriller, financial memoir, and crime story, and the fact that it’s true makes for a riveting book. Very pertinent, considering our current state of affairs. I found the author’s quest to get the Magnitsky Act passed by the U.S. Congress just as engrossing as his memoir about starting the hedge fund in Russia, the discovery of alleged rampant Russian corruption, and the senseless murder of his attorney. It is incredible the hoops he had to jump through to get a relatively benign piece of legislation even brought up for consideration (thanks go to a few enlightened legislators, including Sen. John McCain). Highly recommended.

The first half of this book was an interesting account of the career of Bill Browder, a financier who was one of the first to invest, and become wealthy from the breakup of the USSR. The second half is a frustrating account of the death of one of his lawyers at the hands of Russian corruption. It is frustrating because of the extraordinary tragedy but also because Browder beats his chest with self-proclaimed guilt, while flying off to the south of France to recoup from his stress.

Absolutely insane

A truly fascinating story. I feel bad that I never picked up on this story when it was apparently in the press, and I am just astounded at the corruption and human rights abuses that still exist in Russia today. At times it was almost unbearable to read because it felt like one of those fictional stories where nothing ever goes right, but I had to remind myself that it was real life. The writing isn't amazing and felt colloquial at times, but it gets the job done. Also just want to note that I ordinarily shy away from books dealing with finance and business but Browder did a great job touching on the business side enough to tell the story but not so much that it got boring or overly complicated.

Bill wants to make a name for himself, and the only way he sees how to do it is to start investing in Russia. He's mostly unafraid of the crime in the country, thinking he's immune to it because he's a foreigner, but one day, everything changes. What seemed to be a slam-dunk business opportunity turns into the fight of his life. This true, harrowing tale is sure to interest anyone who picks it up and leave them with more knowledge about investments, politics, and corruption.
