I am very stupid so this was incredibly hard to read, but I did it and it was really good so yay. I love the way Didion knows so much about things that most people would find boring, like the design of malls or the way water moves through America. She has no real motive for knowing these things, she gains nothing but knowledge from learning such, but she does anyway. Her writing is exciting that way, it isn’t something you need to know, but it’s something you want to for the sole purpose of knowing it.

This didn’t resonate with me. Probably the topic of the realities of the 60’s, which seems so dated and tedious to me. I did enjoy the Georgia O’Keefe chapter more than others. Without a doubt, she’s got a style and eye.

Struggled to get through this countless times. Completely well written yet I lacked connection to her journalistic pursuits as a non American reader. I did enjoy quite a few of the chapters, at the beginning and far less towards the second half, not nearly enough for a higher rating unfortunately.

Wow this was a tough read for me to get through. I’ve been trying to read Didion’s works and her essays are so hit and miss for me. I think some of her takes that were more groundbreaking when these were published are not holding up to the test of time and I feel that her perspective represents a very privileged white feminist view.
The White Album did have a few essays I really enjoyed hence the 3 rating, but there were sections that were so slow and boring. In particular, I could have skipped the whole section II California Republic. These essays just did not appeal to me and I found them incredibly boring.
I did enjoy the titular essay, The White Album, and a few of the essays from the sections Women and Sojourns, but I didn’t find this a standout collection of Didion’s work.

stellar essays. the woman has such a style. I don't want to risk an opinion otherwise, because the woman is such an icon, and such a figure of discourse that I'm afraid i'll have a bad stupid opinion and I'll never live it down. it's late though, so maybe I'll be braver in the morning.
