For the first time in this series, I voiced the word 'epic' in my mind when I finished reading this book.

My memories however, are starting to fade. I don't know how much of that is because of my mind, and how much is due to the book itself.

But it was engrossing to read about the trail that Kinsey Millhone has to undertake and the adventurous dangers she faces.

Though it's a five star read, I awarded this score knowing that it doesn't break into my top 20 books. But it made for an interesting read, being icky sometimes, but that was all part of the perusal. I have no complaints.

A reread for me-or I should say a relisten. Love the chemistry between Dietz and Kinsey, Henry's gift to Kinsey of her new apartment and the friendship of Kinsey and Vera. 2 storylines in this book-the hitman hunting Kinsey and the family mystery of Kinsey's case. Entertaining reread.

I love reading Kinsey Millhone mysteries. It's like comfort food...to hell with what's good for you, just enjoy. In this one her usual spunk seemed muted by Dietz's strong character. Still, it was a fun read.

i have to admit, this wasn't my favorite grafton. i prefer my millhone ballsy and spunky, not cowering in fear.

Nice - two storylines bumping up against each other and a little love interest for Kinsey!

BOTTOM-LINE:
Decent book, worth celebrating her birthday.
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
Happy 33rd Birthday to Kinsey! Her apartment is ready, she gets hired to go check on someone's mom, and she's on a hit list.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
As always, Grafton adds some local colour wherever Kinsey goes -- Kinsey gets to a small trailer area, and the directions are to go on down to a corner where there's a Rusted-Out Chevy and take the road next to it called, you guessed it, Rusted-Out Chevy Road. It is such a perfect example to set a mood for the place. More importantly though, Dietz is in the story, hired to protect her from the cheap hitman chasing her. And the book is rounded out by a cold case of a woman with signs of Alzheimer's who is trying to hide a secret.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
Dietz is so hard-core professional with the security side, it feels almost like the Plum series where Ranger is awesome and Plum is a cupcake. It reduces Kinsey at times to passive acceptance and direction, and it doesn't fit well with most of her character.
.
DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow her on social media.

I feel like I say this every time I read another Kinsey Millhone book, but this is definitely my favorite. Before, I thought C is for Corpse was the best, but there was just something about this book that spoke to me. I love it when the main character is totally competent and strong, and yet comes up against something that's bigger than herself and has to reach out for help. I really liked Dietz. He was practical and steady and let Kinsey to her own thing with minimal interference. He didn't take risks with her life, but neither did her try to stop her from living her life. There relationship was really well done. They played off each other well, had great chemistry, and I hope that he shows up in another book down the line. He's a great complement to Kinsey.

The mystery was a little odd. It took the backseat to the threat to Kinsey's life, and that was okay. It was interesting enough that when the book went back to it, I was engaged and wanted to know what was happening, but I was more interested in the A-plot. There were also long periods of time when the mystery wasn't even brought up and that was okay. Having something low-key for Kinsey to do served the book well.

If you're looking for a solid mystery with good characters and relationships, you can't go wrong with the Kinsey Millhone books. This was a solid addition to the series.
