I spent a few years reading almost any book I could put my hands on, then stopped for 4-5 years. I started reading again this year and found a series that dragged me down a rabbit hole, but also made me find my love of reading again. Then came Fourth Wing and I loved it as much as that series, dragging me further down the Romantasy rabbit hole… and I loved every second
I’m pretty sure I’ll read anything written by Rebecca Yarros, but this was another level of awesomness. This book is the start of something great and I can’t believe I was able to wait this long before reading it and falling in love with these characters.
I want Xaden.
I want a dragon!

This is the fastest I’ve ever read a book. Fantasy is not normally my first choice but mannnn it might have to be. Had me hooked from the very beginning. I had gut feelings about some of the larger characters in the book… and it felt so good to be right but I was still SHOCKED when it happened. The way I was audibly gasping in certain parts was CRAZY. can’t wait to continue this series

As much as I LOVE the worldbuilding and the lore, I have a hard time connecting with Violet. I think they need to find new tropes for female protagonists in fantasy romance novels. She’s weak, but smart and sassy, but of course nature balances it out with her two dragons and immense power. She’s stubborn, and has a pattern of talking herself out of self pity, which is refreshing. Her determination comes off as arrogance, which is in stark contrast to the self-pity she always defaults to. Overall, I don’t think she’s the worst written character, but I didn’t see as much growth as I wanted to.

Xaden Riorson was written as that dark, stormy, mysterious male lead who is a jerk but in a hot way. His attraction to Violet was obvious from the start but he remained secretive and aloof. Very different from the character he is revealed to be in the final chapter. I don’t know how to feel about him, it feels very cookie-cutter.

Overall, the plot and lore was good. I really enjoyed the personalities of the side characters. I wish the story wasn’t told from Violets first person POV, because being in her head reminded me of being a moody hormonal teenager again.
