I love the dragon school, the plot line and lore are good but I had a hard time with the social dynamics and tendencies of the main characters.

With a little push from the Ooh’s & Aah’s Book Babes I pushed this book forward on my TBR list. I am quite hesitant when books get a specific amount of hype. I'm always afraid they're going to let me down or plainly not entertain me, but I got to admit I definitely enjoyed Fourth Wing.

It's interesting to see that the story is a so-called transcript by a certain scribe in the story. Which is cool, but also at the time doesn't add up because the story is written in first person. Next to that there's also A LOT of intergenerational trauma in different aspects and characters in this book.

Onto our main character Violet. I was glad to read that she wasn't trained at all. I am so overful with characters that are assassins already or trained at birth for something. Violet is fallible on a lot of counts and I did quite like that. Like RIP this girl's joints. But she also has some clichés going for her, for example that her weapon of choice are daggers. I always wonder that besides the weight of the weapon, that they're also the easiest to master? Because that's some close combat for you, girlypop. She also has a chosen one trope going on, you'll see when you get there.

Onto the side characters. I won't be touching Xaden, although I did feel he lacks layering in this book. Dain on the other hand annoyed the life out of me. He doubted Violet at every opportunity he got, never listening to a word she had to say. That man seriously gave me the ick. The other side characters were fun and interesting, but I also feel like the author did downplay Violet's connection to everyone except Liam. I don't know, I just felt like something was missing.

I most definitely did enjoy the mental connection the riders have with their dragon. The banter on that part was really fun, and I hope to see more of that in book two, although I fear there won't be much time for banter...

All I can say is this: I was hesitant, but I ended up enjoying this book. I will try to pick up part two (and maybe three) from the library as soon as I can.

Incredible

I somehow lost my original in-depth review, but the jist was: lots of stolen/borrowed content from other adult/YA fantasy books like divergent, Harry Potter, LOTR, SJM universe, and GOT. Extremely slow in the 1st half of the book. Almost DNF’d due to poor world building and stolen content.

The only redeeming part was the plot twist at the end.

A-freaking-mazing.

So much yes. I devoured this book, and I am absolutely thrilled there are two more in the series awaiting my consumption of them.
