Indictment of the capitalism, corruption, and environmental degradation and celebration of the diversity, collective action, and community that makes up New York City BUT every character is an animal!! 4 stars - thought provoking and filled with more highlight-worthy lines than most things I’ve read, however it’s not entirely believable that they are llamas, lemurs, pigs, etc
File under: whimsical, thought provoking, well written
Learned about: the city, corruption, action

"Alpacas and llamas have a history. It’s one shaped by invasion, enslavement, murder—colonialism. They aren’t symbolic of the human victims of colonialism in the book, I’m trying my hardest to speak of their trajectory, with a slightly human bent to make it legible. They have been implicated in the colonial project. Real alpacas have been moved around the world, and have had to resettle as a kind of immigrant animal in Australia, Europe, or New York State. They’re all over, working, forming relationships, and they’re totally removed from the land they evolved in. It must be as destabilizing to them as to us. How could the alpaca consciousness not be affected by all this?"

I both loved this book and found it quite disappointing. The details were incredibly vivid, the writing was excellent, and each character was a gift. Unfortunately, I found that the plot meandered, and the first half was slow. I also wish there was more Mitchell in the last third. I'd still recommend Talking Animals overall. Getting a glimpse into Joni Murphy's creative mind is such a pleasure, just like it was with her first book.
Oof. This one pains me quite a bit to write because I a was really looking forward to it. But this book.... I can’t handle how terrible it is, it almost physical pains me. The first part was pretty decent and had lots of potential but then it went downhill quickly. I tried really hard to like it and kept telling myself to keep reading and to give it a chance like I do with every book and that it could only get better. But it didn’t get better, it just got infinitely worse. I made it through to the end (somehow) but it was a rough go and I’m just left so disappointed in this book.
