It was fun being back in Tilikum! Love this quirky town and loved this grumpy/sunshine romance! Max the dog was perfection. The mystery aspect kept me on my toes. I will say that I knew the police were wrong about the subject, but it turns out that my guess was wrong too, so that was fun! Super excited to dive into the rest of the Haven brothers series!

get ready to fall in love with the Havens

If you have read any of the Bailey Brothers books, you will know the Havens and be all team Bailey. In Obsession Falls, we meet the first of the Havens to get their story told, Josiah. Now, I am all team Bailey but you can’t help and fall in love with the Havens, especially Josiah in this book. He is your typical grumpy, grunting, honest to a fault, straight laced, protective, flannel wearing guy. I am all for this. Audrey finds herself back home when she is laid off and can’t find a job. She is intrigued by our grumpy Josiah and had a crush on him in high school. Their story will just have you swooning especially when Josiah becomes protective over Audrey when she finds herself with a stalker. So, touché, Claire Kinglsey. You made this reader fall in love with a Haven.

April 2024 Audiobook Review: Connor Crais, Ava Erickson, with Scott Rose narrate the first book in the Haven Series. Connor does an amazing job as the gruff Josiah. Ava’s narration brings Audrey’s sweetness and sunshine to life. Scott Rose as the “villain” will definitely creep you out.

I liked this well enough. It was a quick and easy read. I’m not sure if I liked it enough to continue the series though. This was more of a palate cleanser after the perfection that is Iron Flame and to be fair… how do you follow that and keep your head above water?

This was marketed as a sunshine grumpy romance. I will say the MMC was not really grumpy. He was actually very kind and polite, he was just more reserved and “stoic”. Josiah was a decent guy. I wasn’t crazy about him but he was fine. Audrey was ok as well. She was the daughter of a politician that passed away. Had some issues with her mother. It was a little hard for me to connect with these characters. The plot was better than the character. Audrey has a stalker and Josiah takes on the role of protecting her and helping her find out who it is. Their relationship development was nothing that interesting, it was actually very realistic. They basically both had a crush on each other, developed a friendship, and then fell in love. The whole time they thought the stalker was her ex Collin but it ends up being her unknown secret half brother. This was a cute book that kept me engaged, but nothing I will be thinking about forever by any means. There was also a really weird scene where the whole town came together and talked about protecting squirrels it was really weird. If that were at the beginning of the book I would have DNF right then lol.

I enjoyed it, I didn't see the twist coming. I would have liked a little more suspense, the squirrels kind of made it seem goofy. I kind of don't know what road this book was trying to take because it couldn't seem to decide.

  • If it's written by Claire Kingsley, I'm learning it is an automatic 5 stars for me.
  • Audrey moves back home reluctantly after being let go from her job. She meets Josiah who is renovating the house next door and who does not speak much. It's a classic grumpy x sunshine. But what happens when Audrey seems to suddenly gain a stalker?
  • Kingsley achieves such an amazing balance of romance and mystery. At no point am I thinking "oh this needs more romance to be a love story" or "the mystery just seems thrown in there for plot's sake." She truly crafts a well-rounded and detailed story that is full of love, banter, mystery, and feelings.
  • I read this book second in the Haven Brothers series and it was so fun to see glimpses of Garrett and the bakery that become the plot in Temptation Trails.
  • Kingsley writes a world full of relatable and lovable characters that leaves you wanting each character to have their own book (which thankfully, some do!)
