Very enjoyable read. It reads like a novel, has excellent maps (so by a good copy or use the detailed color maps on Wikipedia). Highly recommended for any fan of historical fiction.

Great book for anyone looking to understand the human factors in play at Gettysburg. If you've been to the battlefield itself, you have to read the book to truly grasp the feelings of the combatants described. The Confederate fear, Union confidence, and insurmountable resignation of Longstreet during Pickett's charge are incredible to feel reading through this story.

Great read. Shows the horrors of war and you get to meet some pretty remarkable men on both sides, particularly Joshua Chamberlain and Winfield Scott Hancock.

I first visited the Gettysburg battlefield years ago. I knew very little about the battle before I went, but there was a haunting sadness about the place that settled into me. Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-prize winning novel recounts the Battle of Gettysburg from the perspective of officers on both sides, bringing them brilliantly and hauntingly alive. An excellent book, though at times I found it hard to read, because of the waste and tragedy and carnage of that battle, of that war, of all war.

An innovative novel of history rather than an historical novel. It is however, a little maudlin and blindered in its acceptance of the southern ethos.

Its depiction of war and senseless violence are unforgettable, but ultimately this is a very spiritual, thoughtful, sensitive book; there are incredible, excellent stretches of meditation on loss and love and purpose in this world, which now more than ever is increasingly relevant. It's a painful, wonderful goddamn book that makes you see weariness and hopelessness through the eyes of several American legends, each portrayed perfectly. A close to flawless read.

Great book. The style worked really well. I thought I had a good foundation of the Civil War, from high school and college, but the storytelling from the point of view of the main actors in the war, really brings the events to light.

The pace, and flow of the story is great and the intelligence conveyed is worth the read in itself. Once you get going the book flies along.
