Black History In Its Own Words by Ron Wimberly

The art was great and the book introduced me to a number of figures--artists, musicians, writers, activists--who I'd not heard of before.

I'd have liked a different kind of organization of the figures (maybe chronological?), and I'd have liked Wimberly's name to be more present. It's only on the spine and on the publisher's copyright page. His name isn't even in the cover design. A big miss for Image Comics in proper promotion of its Black artists.

Frustratingly short, this collection of inspirational artwork and short descriptions is readily inspiring of joy and hope. It will not take you but 15 minutes to wish you could savor more. Good bathroom reader or coffee table book, except that the illustration and topic seems like too much of a treat or mission to be relegated there, to be consumed as a time waster. Better as a calendar or set of framed posters, perhaps, which is essentially the genesis of the project anyway.

Brilliant. Subversive. Not your usual group of Black heroes.

A deceptively simple book - each page has a brief introduction to a significant figure from Black history accompanied by a quote and an illustration of that person. Inspiring and striking, if occasionally esoteric - and I don't mean that in a bad way. I didn't quite get the relevance of all the quotes on first reading, but they have a combined effect like poetry, washing over you, creating a feeling rather than a meaning.

A visually stunning collection of bold portraits of 39 Black icons paired with quotations and biographical information. Unfortunately a handful of quotes do not have sources or dates. See my full review here.

Thought this was a graphic novel, but it is more of a art book. A pretty decent art book with good art. However, I do wish it was the more in depth graphic novel I thought it was vs the art book I got. Though, that is on me for not looking into it more.

Definitely more of an art book than a graphic novel, this book gives you homework! It's impossible not to want to know more about all these artists, activists, pioneers, and heroes after the brief bio and their powerful quotes here shared. Strong and dynamic artwork.
