“There is birth and there is death, in between, there is maintenance.”
I like Switters and his interesting escapades as well as all the colorful characters that he interacts with. I can’t get it to much because of spoilers but I would recommend this and rate it higher is there wasn’t so much lust after underage girls. Fun story otherwise

3.5 stars. Tom Robbins certainly has a way with words. The story itself wasn't all that exciting but it was a fun read.
Just what you expect of Tom Robbins. A verbose account of a man and his shenanigans.
Robbins' style is unlike any other writer I've read and it's absolutely a blast to read. I think that's what makes this book so successful. The content and story are interesting, yes, and they definitely keep your attention, but you can tell Robbins had fuun writing this book. It breathes life into his main character, Switters. And because of this, you have so much fun reading it. There's no other book I've read that matches his style and his voice and it was refreshing reading something new that I very much enjoyed.
My rating lacks a star however because the end came too abruptly for me. Not that I wish the book would be longer, just that there was so much dramatic setup for a lackluster ending. An easy ending, if I can be so bold. It almost left me feeling as if I could have skipped over half the story because in the end it didn't matter.
But maybe, now that I think about it, that's part of what Robbins was trying to get across...hmmm...

Couldn't put it down. Maybe not quite as good as Another Roadside Attraction but close.
Silence is a mirror. So faithful, and yet so unexpected, is the reflection it can throw back at men that they will go to almost any length to avoid seeing themselves in it, and if its ever duplicating surface is temporarily wiped clean of modern life's ubiquitous hubbub, they will hasten to fog it over with such disparate personal noise devices as polite conversation, humming, whistling, imaginary dialogue, schizophrenic babble, or, should it come to that, the clandestine cannonry if their own farting.
This book was an absolute romp. I loved it. While perhaps not the best book I've read in recently months, Robbins' style is fun and witty, and every second was enjoyable. Definitely a great vacation read.
I admit that it is almost impossible to rate, or describe, this book. Robbins' world of a rogue CIA agent is preposterous, poignant, perceptive, political, philosophical and provocative - and that's just the p words. The brilliance of the writing sometimes spills over into true insanity (perhaps fueled by alcohol and drugs, of course), but Robbins is nothing if not a master of linguistics. Crazy good is about where I rate this one.
