Debut author Ellie Evaris has created an intriguing tale of magic and mystery.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the unique descriptive writing and carefully crafted characters. I got swept up in the story and couldn't put it down.
Really enjoyed the e-book. Will definitely be buying it in hardcover.

This book was amazing, I would definitely recommend it for anyone who loves varying Fae magic, tarot and prophecy magic, as well as a found family and coming of age story. There is an intriguing love triangle that is both maddening and emotional. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished it and hope there will be a sequel! The narrator did an incredible job separating the voices with different accents that were believable and emotional but not distracting to the story.

A somewhat interesting urban fantasy but the exceution fell short. The characters didn't gel well with me. They felt underdeveloped and not fleshed out like Alek for example, who I liked the most.
They felt devoid of character and lacked any substance, especially Aris and Lochlen. This is probably why the romance didn't work for me either which is a shame.
I continued on for the plot though which was at least somewhat enjoyable, if not vague with dream sequences. This made the overall story confusing and I was expecting more. The cliffhanger was expected but I still liked reading it play out.
Thank you to Netgalley and Hidden Grove Books for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Aris has been dreaming for years but doesn’t remember most of them. She has felt that something is about to happen, but it never does … until Alek appears in her life. Alek has his own gift for never being injured and after reading his tarot cards, he believes Aris is the missing link to finding Krysidia. But there is a catch. Aris must learn to control her gift to fulfill the prophecy. Does Aris have what it takes to survive this quest? Who can she trust and who should she be cautious about?
The Prophet’s Gambit is the first book in a fantasy series by the same title. There were chapters that were captivating and others that were lackluster, but since this was a debut novel, that can be forgiven. The characters were easy to relate to and the world-building was well executed. Evaris has created a story with a lot of potential and it will be exciting to see her writing develop in the next installment.

It's been ages since I found a good YA contemporary fantasy series and THIS was exactly what I needed to get back into the genre! I want to be a prophet now (and I think I might steal Lochlen's deck of tarot cards)
Albeit struggling with relatively long chapters at first (maybe it was the Kindle), the characters and the world-building had me on my tippiest tippity toes. The first chapter and the whole dream sequence, I was already a goner. I really wanted to read more of the dreams. And the mythology parts surprisingly had me more intrigued to dive deeper into the realm (I mean, how cool does 'Krysidian' and 'anathemian' sound)
But the best part for me, that ultimately made me love this book as much as I did, is the dynamic between the six main characters and their powers. AND I did not expect the minor twist drops towards the end (also love how there's a pronounciation guide at the end).
Also, I'm stuck in another love triangle

This was my first read from the author and I do think it's a good YA for those you like fantasy it's a wonderful choice. Let me curious enough to read the next one when it comes out but I would have to see more interaction between the sisters Aris and Evie, I do think there's still a lot that needs to be explored.

Thank you netgalley and hidden grove books for the ARC.
This book has such great potential. I love the characters, the storyline and the magic system. However, it is not without its flaws.
The first chapter could have been handled better as it is one of the most crucial parts in the story for its hook. But a lot has happened as if the author picked up on a scene from nowhere that I wondered if there was some missing pages that I didn't know. I understood it must have been done for the mystery but it just didn't work for me. And who was the dead woman at the beginning anyway? Why should she matter in the story? Not so much background was provided so it was hard to keep up with the subtle messages and hints of the past. I struggle with some vague details.
At first I thought her father is alive. This scene's from one of the earlier chapters. Chapter 2 or 3, maybe? He's supposed to give her a ride home from the barn. Until it was revealed later on that he died. I don't know if it was my fault for not understanding well or was it the way it was written? But oh, that moment of realization! David and Ashton are her "dads," her biological father's bestfriends. If only it was mentioned earlier.
The reason why the Anathemians were banished was revealed later on and I was surprised Aris did not question it as soon as she learned about them.
I so, so want to love this story a hundred percent. Everything about it. The plot. The dream concept. The chemistry and tension between the characters. But my mind's in a jumble just by reading this book. Most of the time I spent processing what I just read. Unclear motivations. Unnecessary subplots.
It must have been good if Evie and Aris' relationship was shown in a few scenes just so we can understand why Aris was reluctant to leave. I wanted to see their sibling connection, but unfortunately, there's nothing in the book. I didn't even remember they had a single scene where they talked.
And lastly, the biggest question of all: How are Lochlen and Aris' dreams connected? Is that a prophet thing?
One good thing in this book is the use of symbolism. Aris' dreams symbolizes something in her life, as evident in the story.
Wolf: Having a wolf dream where you are being attacked or chased by a wolf can be a way to bring attention to the ways you are being held back on your spiritual journey. This is often related to carrying the energetic burdens of others or feeling bullied, judged, or controlled by others.
Forest: betrayal and disappointment or care and caution
Lost shoe: people dream about losing shoes because they feel insecure, unprepared, stagnant, lack of support, and lost.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an arc of the book!
Rating: 3.5/5
While this book had an unique concept, I felt in some ways it felt flat. It was difficult to get into, and the main character especially didn't feel entirely fleshed out. The magic system is interesting though, as is the gorgeous cover.

Aris feels as though she is missing something although she's never sure what that something is. That is until she meets Alek and then things finally start to fall into place. As it turns out, Alek and his group of friends needed Aris too. Shortly after meeting they discover that she is in fact the key to finding Krysidia. Only problem is she's not sure how to do that. Lochlen is the best hope of teaching her what she needs to know, but while he seems achingly familiar to Aris, he'd rather keep his distance. With death not far behind, this new group of friends must work against the clock to do what their ancestors could not, and return home to Krysidia. This book has such great potential. I loved the characters, the storyline, and the magic system. However, it is not without it's flaws. Parts of this book were just incredible confusing. I will admit that using the audio version could've absolutely contributed to that, but as someone who listens to audiobooks regularly, it's not a normal problem I have. I believe the areas that left me the most confused was the first chapter and the last three chapters. In both cases a lot was going on and it wasn't always clear on how things happened. The next issue is the pacing. It was fast which made it seem like there were things that were missed and not very well flushed out. It almost felt like we were constantly jumping around and for a group of friends who knew how dangerous the world was, they sure trusted Aris pretty quick. Dreams also come into play in this book, which I love, but it could've been handled better. The dreams were certainly a contributing factor to why things seemed so confusing. I'm still not sure if they were just dreams or if they were prophetic in some way. This story and author have great potential, I will certainly continue with this series, but I hope to see improvement. This is a series I could see myself loving, even if the first book is a little rough, if there are improvements made in book two. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing me to read this ARC. I can't wait to see what the future holds for these characters.

This book gave too much information were not necessary and not enough details were actually needed. For example, some parts were a tad confusing, like what exact powers did the MC posses. Was she an empath AND a prophet? That left me with questions. Overall the writing was very beautiful and you can tell the author is very skilled. But the plot had room for improvement. One thing I really liked about it was the metaphysical/spiritual aspect and I wish the author delved more deeply into.
