The Penguin Lessons is quite the enjoyable read. Michell's writing is simple, but that's not a criticism. It fits the tone of the book and the subject matter. If you go in accepting that this is his memoir of time spend in South America as a young adult, frames around his rescue of a penguin, it is likely you'll find it amusing and heartwarming.

For better or worse though, the star of the book is Juan Salvador (Salvado to his friends), the aforementioned penguin. Michell's description of the birds antics provoked laughter from me on multiple occasions and you can easily picture the bird's behavior from his  vivid descriptions.

However, Juan Salvador all but disappears from the book for nearly a quarter of it. For me, the book screeched to a halt at that point and the breezy read became a more difficult one, which is why I dropped the rating a bit.

And be forewarned, this book is written 40 years after the events, and penguins do not live 40 years. So the ending is rough for those of us who have a connection to pets, but not all the tears are sad ones.

It's only February and I know this is one of my favorite books of the year. One of my favorite books ever more likely! It's delightful and charming, but is more serious towards the end as the author comments on the environment and our impact on it. I fell in love with Juan Salvado and the relationship with the author as well as everyone they encountered. The story is lovely. The writing is also terrific. Recently I've read a few books where the writing ranged from clunky to downright awful leaving me to wonder where the editor was. It was refreshing to read good writing.

A real joy, couldn't stop listening to this innocent story of the bond between man and penguin and their many adventures. Timeless.

Am absolutely fantastic book in the genre of Travels With Charley, which was made even better by the narration of Bill Nighy!
