This book was bad for a variety of reason. Number one was the pace. It was so slow. One hundred pages of build up to something  actually happening was far far too long. And then it just kept happening. The same event for the rest of the book. People dying in the same way. Second, it was trite. It added nothing new or interesting to the Star Wars universe. It played on over used themes and was utterly predictable. And thirdly, and honestly maybe the most annoying thing, it had a whole cast of pointless characters. They really added nothing to the story and I wasn’t sure at time why I was reading about them. I learned about half way through that they were parachuted in from young adult novels and graphic novels. The Legacy Star Wars books didn’t do that. The stories in them were separate from any other media. So someone who didn’t want to read young adult books or comics wasn’t missing content essential to the books. Now, Disney has gone and tied them all together and made it impossible to enjoy one without the others. All these random character with backstories and motivations that were completely absent for me as the reader just made the story boring and slow. Lastly, the writing was, quite frankly, weak.  The author constantly referred to characters by their full name, as if they needed to be reintroduced every time they appeared. It got annoying. There was random and strange formatting, as if I was reading a text book rather than fiction. There was over usage of words and phrases to the point that every time I read the word firmament I rolled my eyes and had to book down for a bit or risk throwing it across the room.

I am typically pretty generous with my reviews, and only give a one star to books that I DNF, but this was a genuinely bad book.

Lots of things happened in this book, many events were very upsetting for me with many characters. Also just continues to build on how insidious Ro actually is. Looking forward to reading the next one coming.

OOOOF.

3.25 because I struggled so much with the first third or so of the book but really enjoyed the rest. I just can't rate this book the same as the other HR books, which I feel were much more consistent in terms of pacing, tone, and so forth.

RTC? Maybe? All of my HR reviews are a little repetitive at this point. It's just a really solid series; what else can I say?

"This is what hope is. It isn't pretending that nothing will go wrong if only we try hard enough. It's looking squarely at all the obstacles in the way — knowing the limits of our own power, and the possibility of failure — and moving ahead anyway. This is how we must proceed. With hope."

Some spoiler-y notes:

- Affie, Leox, and Geode are back! My loves!
- Some things seemed a little <i>too</i> convenient; the internal dialogue in the first half of the book was kind of frustrating to read.
- The fact that every Jedi keeps saying something like "something's wrong" and then finding some justification to ignore it drove me crazy.
- Bell is the LOML
- I laughed out loud at the parts with Geode
- I knew either Stellan or Elzar would die and I was DREADING it
- I shamelessly love Avar and Elzar together sorryyyyyyyy I know its <i>Not The Jedi Way</i> but like, come on:
<blockquote>"Just for a moment. Just a brief sense of melody. But still.

It was the song of the Force as Avar Kriss heard it-and for this instant, she had gifted it to him.

The shock and delight of it broke his concentration. Elzar was back in the present, as far away from Avar Kriss as ever. Yet he was stronger for that moment of communion.

He hoped that Avar, whatever she was doing, whatever troubles she faced, had shared a moment when she heard the waves on the sea.

Both far away and very near, Avar levitated with her arms outstretched, calling upon the song of the Force to sustain them all and give them strength as every Jedi in or near Starlight Beacon fought to save the station and all those aboard. Every individual was a note in the greatest, most meaningful chord she had ever known.

Between those notes lay another sound, so subtle she barely recognized it: the sound of the waves, the roaring of the sea." </blockquote>
