Splendida raccolta di 50 fra le più belle fiabe tramandate su carta dai fratelli Grimm e "aggiustate e levigate" dallo scrittore che segnò la mia adolescenza e mi fece scoprire l'esistenza dei daimon: Philip Pullman.
Non pensavo che una tale raccolta mi avrebbe tanto entusiasmato, ma così è stato! Le storie sono spesso simili fra loro, con gli stessi personaggi, stereotipi e accadimenti, ma leggerle è stato come mangiare tante caramelle, una dietro l'altra… dopotutto se piace il gusto fragola a chi non dispiacerebbe mangiarne subito un'altra sebbene il sapore sia lo stesso? Inoltre è stato interessante scoprire versioni alternative di fiabe universalmente conosciute (la Cenerentola dei Grimm è senz'altro più divertente per certi dettagli!), oppure finali perduti nella memoria (fino a ieri ero convinta che Raperonzolo avesse una fine tragica… invece ricordavo solo metà della storia!). E per concludere, fra le pagine di questa raccolta ho scoperto fiabe che non conoscevo, ma che mi son piaciute tantissimo, come Fratellino e sorellina, e Dognipelo (che nella mia testa è fiorita fino a diventare una storia romanticosissima!).
Insomma, se l'intento era quello di riportare in vita e ripresentare al mondo queste piccole storie senza tempo, per quanto mi riguarda l'obiettivo è raggiunto.

This was a great collection of stories. It made me wish that I had started reading Grimm long ago. I recognized over a dozen of the stories in their entirety, and pieces of others, but there were many great stories that I had never heard of.
My two favorites were "The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs" and "Lazy Heinz." Both of them were funny and fresh and endearing.
I read several of these stories to my children and will read them more.

Some of the stories were more engaging than the others but nothing incredibly memorable or worth recommending.

I really loved this collection; Pullman rewrites them but keeps them as bare and basic as possible. I really appreciated his notes at the end of each tale, as he writes a little of his process in rewriting or the history of the tale, or some of the studies that have been done. As much as I enjoyed rereading these tales from his very hands-off writing approach, I would have loved a book of essays of his thoughts on folk tales.

I did not know quite what to expect when I grabbed this off the shelves of my local bookstore. I have very little familiarity with all but the most ubiquitous fairy tales and wondered what I would gain from a collection of them. By the end, I had developed a deeper appreciation of the ones I knew and had been exposed to many fascinating tales that were entirely new to me. Pullman's commentary also helped me place the specific tales as well as fairy tales in general into a much clearer context than I had ever had.

Pullman did a lovely job pulling together various threads of fairy tales - not only from Grimm, but from elsewhere -and putting them together into cohesive stories. His narrative notes at the end are rich to read, explaining the origin(s) of the story, as well as his thoughts on it - how it might be improved; or what might have been lost in translation.
