Me after finishing this book:
Chaotic review:
This is really more like 4.5 stars. I enjoyed this book immensely! The beginning was a bit slow but the payoff is so worth it. The weaving of storylines gets deeper and tighter and keeps you on the absolute edge of your seat.
wowowow now I have to wait “unknown amount of time” until the next book. Pardon me while I shed tears and re-read the first two books until further notice.
SUCH incredible world building still. Characters that are so real and intriguing.
I am an Iktan S T A N. I am a Xiala stan.
The end.

I admittedly had to go and look up a quick summary of what happened in the last book bc it’s been long enough since I read Black Sun that I’d forgotten a good chunk of the names. However, this is all things considered, a really good middle book of a trilogy. It keeps things moving, focuses and expands on some of the side bits that were hinted at last book, and actually manages to subvert a trope that it seems to be building to throughout the novel, all while setting the stage for some Big Shit to go down next book. Lots of amazing lesbians and bisexuals, too, which is always a huge plus. Definitely pick it up when it comes out.
4.25-4.5!! definitely i think a lot of stage setting for the final book, but really fascinating plot and character development and v excited and impatient to see how it manifests in the finaleeeeeee
Reread 2024
This book was still pretty slow the second time but having read the first book only a month ago rather than 2 years prior like the first time I read it it definitely improved my experience. Excited to finally get to the final book!
Original Review 2022
3.5 this definitely suffered from second book in a series slump. Not much action and a LOT of set up for things that will probably come to fruition in book 3.

Fantastic world building and amazing lore peaking out from all the corners. The characters sometimes take a back seat to the world building, but they still feel fairly fleshed out. Ultimately a great story with an amazing world to experience. Very excited for the last book in the series.
This starts right after the ending of the first book, which is both good and satisfying, but also reinforces my thought that the ending the first book was too abrupt and not as ending-ish as it could have been.
That being said, this book is delightful. More details are learned, more intrigues uncovered, more history revealed, and more magic is afoot. And the ending is satisfying while also leaving the threads of the third novel clearly laid out.
I was not disappointed, this book was a great second novel in the series, and I look forward to the next. I just don't really look forward to waiting.

I was hoping for more mermaids and less pining. Happy to see more of some side characters from the first book though.
This is the second book in the Between The Earth and Sky duology - I won't give much away in regards to the plot, but I don't read a ton of full blown fantasy, and the first book, Black Sun was one of my top books of 2020. Book one ends with a bang, and this one jumps right back in to our characters following the events of the convergence - it is busy, there is a lot going on with our characters and a few new ones and plots introduced. I loved the tension when our main characters came together. While a lot happened in this book, it felt like it was mostly setting up for the next book (totally fine for a book two) just a little more of a transition/middle book!
Naranpa did whaaat???
Very Game of Thrones vibey. But like something I actually want to read and continue reading. Sorry not sorry George Rawr Martin.
CAN’T WAIT FOR THE THIRD BOOK!
