In the begining of this book I was a little confused about what was the main goal of the characters and how they were going to achive that, but, as the story progressed, the goal became clear and the "how" didn't. And thats what kept me interest in the story and the characters.
The characters felt real and very diverse, both in background and in personality.
There were times when I couldn't put the book down and i am very excited to see how its going to end.

The author did an amazing job of bringing to life ancient Pompeii! This is like the seedy underbelly of the Cambridge Latin course textbook book 1. Felix et fur? More like Felix est fur! There were even a lot of the characters with the same names - a little Easter egg? Or just common names?

I loved the bond that the woman living in the Wolf Den had, as well as the great character development we ser from Amara as well as the tragedy of their lives. Interesting mix of characters. Looking forward to reading book 2.

This book does not sugarcoat or cower away from the ugly realities of what life was like in the Roman Empire as a woman. It is exquisitely researched and it shows in the descriptions of places and daily minutia; these are the two keystones of this book. Throughout the book, the main character fights for her freedom and learns about the cost of that freedom. For a woman like Amara and many other women, it is a price they must pay.
I enjoyed the historical details and the themes, but there were times where the plot felt non-existent and any plot points that did exist felt very inconsequential.

If you want everything to end up perfectly fine with a hero that swoops up the main character, then don’t read this. It is brutal in the description of what life would be like as a whore in Pompeii. The characters are written so realistically that it hurts. Nobody is black or white, only gray.
