“Either we choose to stay alive, or we give up. And if it's living we choose, then we do whatever it takes”
Oh god THIS BOOK was so fucking good. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I have. I inhaled this in a day, truly a rollercoaster to read.
Violent, depressing, heart breaking, infuriating… this story is one of sisterhood, love, hardship, sex & betrayal.
The author certainly doesn’t soften any of the language and is brutally candid when telling the most violent and abhorrent of things. So I will say there are plenty of trigger warnings- rape, violence, cohesion.
The characters were intricate, their relationships with each other were so complex. Bound together by trauma but also jealous and desperate.
Honestly this story absolutely enraged me, to the point of angry tears, and any book that can make me feel like that deserves 5 stars in my eyes. If you like feeling feminine rage then this is a book for you!
“Here we all are, four penniless slaves sucking off idiots for bread and olives”
I did particularly like the more humour aspects of the girls trying to lighten the mood of their collective situation. It was undercut with desperation and trauma despite the witty lines and the complete lack of sugarcoating really added to the story.
