I have mixed feelings about this book. Let’s start with the positives. It was definitely an easy read — the story is fast paced, the characters are likeable, and it’s quick to get through.

Overall though, I found it to be vaguely offensive. It’s VERY crude. I mean like, beyond crude. I think she took a really serious historical topic, like slavery and prostitution, and turned it into a cheap novel that really disrespects the experience of thousands of enslaved women.

Also, it’s not even trying to be time period accurate which is super annoying.

But mid - I enjoyed the historical settings but didn’t give a fuck about anything

At first, I thought this book would be too slow and nothing would happen. I even thought "I get why these people weren't written about".

BUT. This is a beautiful book about a cunning woman who lives in an unfair and cruel world. Who tries to make the best of it. Who tries to be a person, while being seen and used as an object by other people.

All this ánd you learn a bit about the history of Pompeii. What more do you want?

What are you waiting for? Start reading!

P.s. I really disliked Felix, but at the same time I want to know more about him. I hope he will come back in the second book, just so I can hate him some more.

Don’t read much historical fiction but this story of enslaved sex workers in AD74 Pompeii was a great read. I loved the characters. The plot had a lot of action (maybe not enough to warrant 450 pages) and was really well researched.
