The Night They Vanished has one of the creepiest covers I’ve seen lately; you should definitely judge this book by its cover
The Night They Vanished by Vanessa Savage is a thrilling mystery about an estranged daughter who realizes her family has suddenly disappeared. Then there’s a new blog post on her blind date’s website announcing their murders & obvious chaos ensues.
This is a book about more than just a psychological thriller, but also about the complexities of family dynamics & the imperfectness of human nature. It’s frustrating. It’s messy. It’s dark. They’re complicated, rough pasts that creep into the present.
I struggled with the parents’ choices & found it very frustrating to read. I did think it came together nicely at the end.
I enjoyed the dual point of view from the two sisters & the alternating timeline leading up to the disappearance. This book gets 3 stars from me!
The Night They Vanished comes out May 5, 2022!
Massive thanks to NetGalley & Grand Central Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Trigger warnings: This book mentions &/or contains violence, death, drugs, abuse, murder, rape & suicide.

The Night They Vanished. An intriguing title all on its own. Throw in the dark tourism element and you have the makings of an interesting story. I wasn't sure what I was getting into with this one. I was drawn into this story and could not put it down. I ended up reading it in one day.
The book is divided in to two perspectives. One being Hanna, the rebellious teenager, now 30-year-old who is estranged from her family after she destroyed it some 15 years prior and her sister Sasha, who is not allowed to do anything because she might turn into Hanna. Hanna had some problems, running away, drinking, and drugs.
The story opens with Hanna having just gotten out of relationship, living in her owned flat and working a stable job. All seems well and good until she's set up on a blind date by her best friend Dee. Adam is a seemingly nice person with one weird interest: he runs a website for dark tourism. Dark tourism for those that don't know is tourism directed to places that are identified with death and suffering. Hanna is a little freaked out but he's hansom and funny, so she's interested. Until the day after their date when she decided to check out his website. There she sees a new entry. An entry about a new location to check out and the brutal slaying of the family that lives there. Its Hannas father, stepmother and sister and the location is the caravan park that her father manages. Hanna of course is immediately scared and goes to the police. The police cannot locate her family and things just go from bad to worse pretty quickly.
Hanna is informed that her family moved from the location a few months prior and are now living at another caravan park location, but they aren't there either. Everyone is surprised to find out that Hanna had no idea they were moving. In order to find her family, she's going to have to face the tragedy that divided them 15 years before and figure out who in her life is trying to make her pay for the decisions she made.
I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I wasn't sure who was the one stalking both Hanna and Sasha and who could have been the one close enough to Hanna that they would know all the information, yet she wouldn't suspect them. I had some inklings as to who it might be but was still surprised to find out exactly what happened in the end. The chapters are short, and I felt the story itself was well put together and everything wrapped up nicely when all was over. A dark thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, dying to find out what's going to happen. I received this book free from Grand Central Publishing and Novel Suspects for an honest review.

This book kept me hanging on with the mystery of it all. I will admit I was expecting something a little more sinister but I do have to remind myself that this is a thriller and not an all out horror. It was well written and I liked the characters. The ending didn’t quite deliver how I wanted it to, but it was decent

Read this if...you like slow-burn mysteries that feature dysfunctional families.
Hanna left home when she was a teenager and hardly ever visits the place she used to call home. Her relationship with her father, stepmom, and half-sister is strained, to put it nicely. Hanna used to be a “delinquent,” but has worked hard to leave her traumatic past behind her. When she meets a nice guy who runs a dark tourism website, she is sucked back into old drama. Someone hacks the site and posts about a murdered family at Hanna’s old address. When the police investigate, the house is abandoned and her family is missing. In order to save her family, Hanna has to confront her demons and a deadly killer.
This thriller was a little slower paced than I usually prefer. I liked Hanna’s character and the dark tourism plot point had such great potential. I haven’t read any thrillers that address that topic and I was really looking forward to picking this book up because of that aspect. Unfortunately, it was underutilized and what could have been an enthralling mystery ended up being just okay. There were a lot of great things about this book (the characterization and the ending, especially), but it was missing the WOW factor needed to be memorable for me.
A huge thank you to Novel Suspects, the author, and Grand Central Pub for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was an interesting thriller about a mysterious tragedy of the past and all the people that it impacted. There was a bit of a focus on dark tourism that I loved so much, and I wish that could have been more of the main focus! There were also a lot of interesting characters that I loved learning about.
I found this book to be full of mystery. It kept mentioning things that happened in the past, and I desperately wanted to know the full details. That was a big part of what kept me invested in this story.
There were two POVs (sisters Hanna and Sasha) and while I liked them both, I think I was more invested in Hanna’s. There seemed to be more going on in her storyline, while Sasha’s was more about a 14 year old girl that had incredibly strict parents.
But I gotta say, I think the real villain of this book is Hanna and Sasha’s dad. (This isn’t a spoiler, he’s very clearly a terrible person.)
I would recommend this one for those who are new to thrillers and want a tamer one to ease into things. I found this to be much more focused on family/relationship drama as opposed to twisted characters. I liked it, but there were some things missing for me.
Big thank you to Grand Central Pub for my gifted copy. This one is out now!
