I don't think this is my favorite book, but it's pretty good- and quite an impressive move to write a children's book where the main character . It's a nice cultural introduction to Japan for young people, too.

This book broke my heart when I read it in 4th grade, and I picked it up recently only to find it just as poignant as I did then.
I remember exactly where I was sitting when I finished this book for the first time, tears nearly preventing me from reading on. My classmates asked me if I was alright, and I was unable to answer. Few books in my lifetime do I remember so vividly.
I saw this book in a bookshop a year ago and immediately decided to reread it. I tried to get the kids I was babysitting interested, but when they found the storyline "slow" I finished it on my own. It's such a quick read but tragic nevertheless. It brings humanity to the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings at a time when most people still saw them as justified, and still dehumanized Japanese people. Heck, in my own grade school experience there were plenty of kids still glorifying the atomic bomb dropping. This story is necessary, beautiful, tragic, and hopeful.
