It's 1:30 in the morning and I just finished this book. It's one of those books that just hits you straight in the gut. I ugly cried my way through the second half and was absolutely drawn into the lives of all three main characters. It's one I won't stop thinking about for a LONG time. Young adult lit is, as usual, the real MVP.

Im not sure how to rate this book. I really did enjoy this book. I almost cried twice and I’m really happy for the characters. So I guess 3,5?

RTC (maybe)

I liked this, but I wish the thing that happened in at the end of the third act hadn't happened. And also the stuff that happened in the fourth act as a result of/to make up for that thing I wish hadn't happened.

I so love this book. The characters! Left me in tears.

3.5

I've had this book sitting on my shelf for about 2 years now and I've heard good things but there was just something about it that made me not want to pick it up.
Now I'm moving and sorting my books and I looked at this and finally decided to just bite the bullet and read it for goodness sake.

I'm glad I did. This was lovely. It took me a little bit to get into it but soon I was invested in the characters and their lives. It was so hard to put down. I tried to sneak pages in while I was working (that didn't work out too well).

As different as Travis, Lydia, and Dill were, I related to all of them. I understood Lydia's desire to move away and create something and to finally find like-minded people. I got all mushy at Travis's personality and his attitude of not caring what other people think. He's such a fanboy, it was easy to image myself being his friend. And Dill. Dill who struggled with his faith and his family. Dill who wrote music from his heart but was hurt when his mom didn't understand him. Dill, I understood, too.

The three of them were the perfect misfits and complemented each other wonderfully. They were heartbreaking to read and I want to know more about their lives.

So don't be like me. Pick up this book and you'll fall in love with the characters, too.

This f-ing book, man. I have never cried for such a long period of time while reading a book before.

Incredibly solid story, and even more realistic characters. While I started the first half of the book hating Lydia, she was absolutely necessary. She was necessary in the lives of Dill and Travis. And oh my god I'm going to cry again.

There's a lot going on this book. Guilt, abuse, death, family fights, small town suffocation, college drama... and yet for all that it's not a stereotypical issue novel where the problems overpower the characters. Loved Lydia and Dill and Travis. It's a beautiful debut novel and I can't wait to see where Zentner goes next!

This book was awesome, but more than that I read it at exactly the right time. After a long, confusing, and kind of "bleh" day, I zoomed through the second half of this book. No spoilers but I sobbed. Multiple times. Sometimes though it is just cathartic to cry, and books make more sense than life right now. If I can just read about these characters struggles, and successes, and cry with them and come out on the other side feeling better, then I think the book has worked it's magic. It was also just an amazingly powerful book, about figuring out who you are, and how your family does, or doesn't define you.

Wow this book. It hooked me from the beginning so much so that I read the whole thing in one sitting. I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It made me laugh and cry. I will definitely be checking out anything that Jeff Zentner writes in the future
