"It would be shooting out its rays from Sarah's bones for centuries, long after she was gone. Even though it had killed her, it kept on bombarding her body 'every day, every week, month after month, year after year'.
It is bombarding her body to this day."
no 😭 free her

I enjoyed the historical information in this story and found it so tragic that the knowledge of what radium could do was never shared with those being exposed. Greed and selfishness once again rules over humane treatment of others.
I listened to the audiotape version and found the story challenging to follow. It could be because there were so many names, dates and constant going forward and backward in time during the story. I am glad I stuck with the audio version. This book reminded me of the Henrietta Lacks biography.

Radium poisoning - what a horrific way to die. 😭
This is a deeply upsetting true story about the women who worked with radium-based paint in the early 20th century - and the devastating, slow, and painful health consequences they suffered as a result. The descriptions of how radium poisoning affected their bones and bodies were honestly quite tough to listen to.
The story itself is important - absolutely worth telling and remembering. But I didn’t love "the way" it was told. The writing was often overly sentimental, and the audiobook narration leaned hard into the dramatics, which I found grating at times. I understand the author wanted us to see these women as individuals, but I didn’t need constant reminders of how pretty and feminine they were to care about them??
Overall, I’d recommend this to readers of feminist history, medical history, or anyone interested in untold stories of resistance and justice. Just be prepared - it’s not an easy listen (or read), but an important one.
4/5 ⭐
