"I was an afterthought to my mother."

Pros:
The audiobook was gold and I liked hearing two different voices describe different perspectives. Justin
was so funny the way he deadpanned some of the jokes!
The storyline kept me interested, and I was thinking about it outside of listening time. And their flaws made the characters seem real, rather than storybook ideal.

Critiques:
Some character traits were trigger-ish (
enabling, normalizing toxic behavior, abandonment & neglect, eldest child syndrome, hypocrisy, denial, etc.
) and I appreciated the author's forewarning.

The overuse of the term
"best friend" when referring to Maddie, when in fact they were essentially sisters/foster family siblings.

Probably my biggest irritation with this story was
the ending. Everything was wrapped up so neatly, kumbaya and all that, with decades of childhood abuse and trauma rapidly resolved in a few months. Emma had the PRIVILEGE to simply leave a challenging situation, to literally abandon the people who care about her, while she tried EMDR therapy. She had the PRIVILEGE to put her life and her relationships on pause while she took half a year to herself, and then waltzed back into everyone's lives as a healed person. I just can't get on board with that. It's unrealistic to say the least!

Also, it must be said,
Amber makes me ragey.

I recall that I enjoyed others in the series and I wasn't disappointed. This was cute in it's way and the characters had enough depth and interesting back story. Emma's was pretty dark, almost a bit too much. I liked the throwbacks to the previous stories and am tempted to reread those. Someday.

Better character growth in this book that the previous in this series, I.e. the FMC wasn’t too stubborn to change. The plot was more realistic in pace and leaned into the reality of the trauma both main characters experienced. Couldn’t put it down towards the end! Author did a good job tying in the other characters in the world.
