I finally finished this - I've been reading it for months, and was having a lot of trouble getting through it even though the prose is beautiful. I think she definitely captures something different/unique and emotional about the location (the DRC). I thought that the best part was the differentiation between the three sister characters, and how she sets up their different world views. All in all, I think this is really worth reading for the prose and characterization, but the narrative lags a little. One part I'm still mulling over is the father character, who I feel like was purposefully not very developed... not sure if I have any insight, but I found myself trying to figure out what the author was trying to say with that, and still not sure.

Wonderful. Loved the book. It was, however, long in sections.

I read this several years ago with no knowledge of Africa and couldn't see what all the fuss was about this book. Then I read Things Fall Apart, which gives the African perspective of colonization and was dying to reread the Poisonwood Bible. I loved this book. I loved the 5 narrators and the range of perspectives you get in the novel because of it. A must read!

I really enjoyed this book. It was unique and I enjoyed reading all of the sister's views. It also gave an interesting outlook into what was happening in the Congo huring that time period.
