The story is good. It is smartly written. A good contemplation on postcolonial Africa and the death of religion. However, it just wasn't all that entertaining for me. The characters were somewhat flat to me, especially the Africans, and the Price children with the exception of Adah held no interest for me. That is not the fault of the writer but my own failings at engaging with the story. It felt just too long and I've found in both of the books I've read of Kingsolver's that they take so long to develop before I start to get interested. Never got all the way there with this one. Still, not a bad book, and not a waste of my time.

Fantastic book, brilliantly weaving motif, narrative, and character - loved it

One of my favorite books I’ve read this year! Kingsolver does such an amazing job bringing together biblical references, Congolese culture, colonialism, and identity within a family. I truly dived into each mindset feeling immersed in the changing narratives for each chapter changes perspective of sister. Kingsolver put so much into this book, it really is an epic!
