could not get this book off my mind the entire time i’ve been reading it. the writing style itself and use of language was also enchanting- adah’s chapters! i would be interested to see if this book would change at all 30 years on. i think the nathan price of it all would somehow be even more terrifying. also the voice is of course only to those who had the choice to be there, but also that’s kingsolver’s own voice and it feels probably reductive to criticise it for that
also i see hate for the 2 different paces and personally i think this long drawn out childhood to the disparate adulthood only strengthened the characters

Barbara Kingsolver i need a word! This book had me in shambles, tears almost!
Such a beautifully written book. Every character has such a unique voice, and I especially liked all the little malapropisms, especially in the Rachel and Ruth May chapters. The Adah chapters absolutely sing. I also liked seeing how these characters change throughout their lives, each being shaped by the Congo, for good and ill. The strongest stuff is in the first half though, in Kilanga. The character dynamics feel so fleshed out in a way that is just not really possible in the latter parts where the sisters are separated and the vignettes are years apart from each other. It was an especially strong choice to give no interiority to the father, so that he is this constantly menacing force more than he is a real character, because he clearly sees himself as an instrument of God's will more than a real person, and this shows how destructive that mentality can be, both to himself and to everyone around him.
