This is a book women of color should read. I love how her honesty shines through.

4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book (I listed to the audio version). Gabrielle was thoughtful & funny & WOW was she honest. I appreciate her willingness to show herself in a light that was not always positive. Some of the stories had me laughing and kicking my feet, while others we a lot more serious. She goes into detail about her SA as a teen, and how it affected her in years to come. I loved her stories about being a stepmom and raising the boys. The only reason I remove half a star is because the stories did not seem to have a good rhythm leading into each other, and some stories I was left wanting more.

Overall, would recommend and I plan on listening to her 2nd book very soon!

This audio book was recommended to me and wow I was not expecting this. In Gabrielle Union’s memoir, she shares stories about her life, and wow. The things she shares are so deep and her ability to describe her painful experiences is inspiring and heartbreaking. Mix that in with funny stories that involved laugh out loud moments and this book was a winner. Listening to Gabrielle was like listening to a friend - in both the sad and painful moments and the funny ones. If you haven’t read this one, I highly recommend it!

This is for the audio book version, I tend to prefer audio books for memoirs.

I didn't know much about Gabrielle Union before listening to her memoir and I really enjoyed it. She is direct, funny, and relatable. She talks about her relation to race through being a Black woman, a Black actress, a Black (step) mother, and how it changed through the years.

Union was also very honest and real about her CW: rape. About her conflicting feelings about being grateful for certain things within a horrific situation. The fact that she hasn't and will never get over it, her moving between being a victim, survivor, victim, survivor.

Gabrielle is pretty open about mistakes she has made, what she wishes would have been done differently, owning her shortcomings in her relationships with other people. I feel like I say this with so many audio books, but it felt like I was sitting with a friend, her just talking to me.
