One of the best books in the series by far and my favorite of the trilogy. I love Ben Alderson so much but this is by far my favorite trilogy yet.
He really ties in the whole universe with this series. I loved seeing how all the species were made and was not disappointed by the werewolves in this one. What an absolutely fresh take on it! It's so different then what I'm used to and the pack dynamics actually intrigued me way more than it usually does. To be made form the darkness of the vampires and yet be their enemy. Wow!
I really loved the main characters. They were so heart wrenching. To watch Rhory as he goes through his transformation from being a beaten down man to finding his voice and strength, so good. He was so dynamic and him using his powers from emotions rather than what we learned originally was quite different. Calix frustrated me though with his secrets. There was so much he wouldn't tell us but he was SO. FREAKING. PASSIONATE! Calix only wanted what was best for Rhory no matter what and his sweetness and wearing his heart on his sleeve had me emotional.
All the side characters were so well done. It was cool to see Aurial come back and how she has changed after so many years. Eamon had me wanting to murder him all the way through as was planned. To see him finally come to the answer he had been wanting though was quite interesting and engaging. Millicent as well, what a queen.
I loved that Marius and Jak came back as well. I wish Arlo and Faenir had come back but I was not disappointed as everything else made up for it.
The romance! Definitely one of the best. I enjoyed seeing Rhory and Calix fall in love with a couple scenes from the past and then see that connection spark between them again once they meet again. They have such a passionate romance and are so committed to each other. I was rooting for them the whole way through. Calix did frustrating me at times as he didn't state the whole truth to protect Rhory even if it was to protect Rhory. They wanted nothing but the best for each other though and were there for each other no matter what.
The plot was very good. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time to the point I was struggling to put this book down. Reading the abuse Rhory went through had me so emotional. Watching the mystery unfold as to his lost memories and his time once he was kidnapped was paced pretty good and kept me going. I kept dying for the mystery of the past to unfold and actually seeing it played out vs just hearing about it from Calix or someone else was really well done. I was a bit disappointed with Eamon's death and it was pretty anticlimactic so that was a bummer but Silas' death did not disappoint.
The setting is amazing as always. I feel like pretty much everything in this universe is so well thought out. I love seeing how all these species cam to be and their impact on the world. I feel like a lot of loose ends were tied up and it felt like a final for sure. I'd like to know more about how the werewolves play out but it was still good considering this is pretty much how they began or being first found out by everyone. I don't feel disappointed or like I'm missing pieces of this universe though.
Ben's writing has gotten so freaking good. I've been reading some just good or ok books lately which might help but picking up this book, I was blown away by his writing. I love the descriptions of everything and the similes and metaphors. I don't feel like anything was over done either. It was nice and lengthy and just overall so well written.
Lastly, the smut. Holy. SHIT!!! We had multiple scenes with multiple positions and lube! The smut was very on point to what I would expect from real life especially because lube and preperation was involved. They were so lengthy and descriptive, ugh, it had me swooning. They didn't feel out of place or out of character and the books wasn't revolved around just having these smut scenes. It is definitely some of the best smut from published books I've ready in a while.
I can't recommend this book enough and everyone should read the trilogy.

Adding sexy werewolves to this universe was such a great idea. It feels strange describing the romance between the protags as "cute," but it is. Despite the mire and death around them, the love between Rhory and Calix is cute! They're adorable! But something I noticed with Jak's mother in the first book, Faenir's grandmother in the second, and it's beginning to look as though mothers/mother figures are evil--which I guess fits the "retold fairytale" narrative. I do think the most interesting and tragic part of this book was

now Rhory's motherSpoiler
Rhory and Silas are both Eamon's victims, but Silas denied forgiving and so was punished for it. Which kind of bummed me out as I was hoping for some kind of catharsis/happy ending for him
