I don't have a whole lot to say about this volume except HOLY SHIT, I LOVE KEIKO!! She's such an underrated character and love interest and it KILLS me because she is SO DAMN FIERCE! You can just tell that while she cares a lot about others she also has precisely zero fucks left when it comes to tolerating bad behavior and I LOVE IT. Seriously, she does not get the love and praise she deserves and I think I'll make it my mission to praise her as much as I can while I review this series.

That aside, this was a much more solid volume than the first one and it looks like shit's gonna start gettin' real in the next volume. I kind of wish it hadn't taken two volumes to get his life back, especially since it felt like it was needlessly dragged out than rushed, but we got awesome character moments from Keiko and Yusuke, so all's well that ends well I suppose.

Volume two of YuYu Hakusho and we're still following our teen ghost and his extremely wholesome adventures!

The story is picking up quite a bit this volume and we can finally see some character development. However, a massive plot twist has just occured in the final chapter of this volume and I have no idea where we are headed.

I'm beyond excited to continue this manga and follow along on these ghostly adventures!

I'll be honest. Most of these reviews I did in like maybe fifteen minutes? I haven't been able to review them directly after finishing them, but it's kind of helped in a way. I've been able to stew and think about the books I bit more and just- wow.

This was a major let down from the first volume.

Savoured the slice-of-life tone; there is something really endearing about the delinquent turned charity worker. 🥺❤️ AND... HE'S ALIVE!

Didn't like this as much (ie. I didn't cry) as volume 1. But there were still lots of great moments. I can't wait to see how he'll integrate himself into society again. Mama Urameshi, Kuwabara and Keiko, plus school, teachers, etc; what're they all gonna do not that he's back?

More of the same as Yusuke is still in Limbo, but we do make a connection with a lonely ghost girl, Sayaka, who was a sickly child mostly stuck in hospitals before she died. So she clings onto Shota (who was the kid who's dog died), drawing his spirit out when he goes to sleep at night. And though the kid enjoys the time they spend together, these nightly visits will take a toll on his health. Yusuke and Botan try to interfere and she shoots a beam out of her hand, knocking Yusuke out for a few days. (WHEN'S THE FINGER GUN COMING IN??) So Yusuke volunteers to play with her instead and she sticks around.

Then we get a story about a jealous rivalry between friends. We learn that you can summon a spirit to harass someone else? Anyway, it's get out of hand because of course if you use mysterious spells, there's a chance it'll get out of control. Anyway, things turn out fine for the pair and they're friends again.

We the pivot back to our gang, and Sayaka learns about Keiko, the "girlfriend." She wants to make sure Keiko is worthy of Yusuke. She concludes that Urameshi must like her, but is the feeling mutual? And if so, how much does she like him? Keiko is meanwhile caring for Yusuke (because absent mom) and the apartment is set on fire by a dumbass, random arsonist. She goes to rescue him, but is about to die herself. Koenma appears and helps save her, in return for the virtue and goodwill Yusuke has built up while in Limbo. And here is where I realized that Yusuke does in fact care for, and this isn't one-sided affection. He says this is the first time he's felt frustrated as a ghost because he couldn't help her, having instead to stand by and watch as she does reckless things. Sayaka, seeing all of this, acknowledges that Keiko is alright in her book. Furthermore, she's ready to move on.

Shizuru, Kuwabara's sister is pretty cool.

Enter Matsuo, a good boy who just wants to do the right thing the right way. Urameshi knew him and jumps into his body to help him fight off bullies, getting trapped as a result. Though it takes some time, Urameshi manages to talk Matsuo into taking the step towards being more confident in his boxing abilites. Matsuo, no longer needing Urameshi, unconsciously unleashes him from his body and proceeds to kick ass.

Lastly, the Underworld Council gives the ok for Yusuke to return to his body. Keiko delivers the kiss of life and he's a real boy again. BUT'S THAT'S JUST THE BEGINNING!

i think this volume had a lot of very questionable content. i love Togashi-sensei but it would seem that even he was susceptible to trends/tropes of the time when YYH was first being published.. they did not age well..
similarly to volume 1, there were story beats here that were completely skipped in the anime, and i think it was for the best.
the preview for volume 3 had Hiei! i am excited to move on~
