As anticipated, this book was 5* for me. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator is fantastic; I couldn’t put it down! I’ll be continuing the series soon :)

I still haven't really been able to get into the games that much, but with Ciri being shown as the next protagonist, I figured to try getting back into the books. She's featured a lot in this one, so it was a good starting off point. I found it entertaining enough, though the way the story was written was pretty odd.

In a way, it almost felt like I was reading the short stories again. Because while it was a progression, each chapter almost felt like a self-contained narrative. It also focused on a lot of different plots, most of which never got a satisfying conclusion. There was this part with Geralt, Triss, and Ciri all traveling together. Triss gets food poisoning and then they're attacked by elves. Then it jumps to Ciri being trained by Yennefer while having visions about Geralt, Dandelion, and this new character. The story just keeps jumping around like that, and it never felt like there was one cohesive narrative.

I don't really like that the characters that annoyed me the most were all female characters. Triss, Yennefer, and even Ciri to a degree all got on my nerves. I guess I can say that it was pretty accurate on how the men got awkward when Ciri mentioned she was on her period, but that whole section started to make me very uncomfortable. Triss insists on Ciri being treated as more of a high-class lady rather than being trained like any other witcher. One of the things she tells the boys is to not feed Ciri certain things, since it would reduce Ciri's "womanly assets" or however it was phrased. Then Yennefer was constantly calling Ciri ugly. It was just a lot.

Individual parts were really good. I liked the discussions as Ciri went through her training. I also liked the dwarves and that whole conversation about the elves. There was a good talk about what it meant to be neutral, and how other people saw the upcoming war. The conversations were all really good. The only trouble was that so much of the book was told through dialogue, there was hardly any description for anything. The book relies way too much on a reader's imagination to fill in the gaps.

I may read on to the next book. I do like Geralt as a character, and Ciri was pretty good most of the time. I'm hoping that she matures a little by the next book.

I think the relationship-building in this series is some of the most compelling I've read in all of fantasy. I can't put these books down. Absolutely fantastic.

I definitely wouldn't read this one as the series' first book. Chronologically, it's the third book, and reading the [b:The Last Wish|40603587|The Last Wish (The Witcher, #0.5)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529591917l/40603587._SX50_.jpg|2293675] and [b:Sword of Destiny|25454056|Sword of Destiny (The Witcher, #0.7)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1671660198l/25454056._SX50_.jpg|1877799] helps this one go down much easier because it is so politically heavy. Overall it's still an enjoyable read and helps set up everything to come in the following books.

I'm not sure what didn't quite click for me with this one, but it was a much slower read than the first two short story collections. Maybe it's just that it was ground that was largely covered by the TV show recently so I felt like I already knew what was coming, maybe it's that the copy I had was a mass market paperback and just less physically pleasant to read, but anyway. Should not have taken me a month, even if I was reading a 900 page science fiction novel at the same time. Hopefully 2 picks up for me.
