Had it not been for an amazing narrator, I might have given up on this one (just as I almost did on its predecessor).

The author is very clearly having trouble transitioning from short stories to an actual novel, which is clear from the loosely-connected vignette structure of this book. He is also still bad at writing women, the main character is still bland and boring, but there’s hints here of more interesting material.

How can individuals live moral lives when inside rotten institutions without hope for systemic change? How do colonized peoples survive in complex international situations? Maybe the sequels continue to focus more on these questions and less on the edgelord garbage and barstool humor, but it’d take a good bit of change to make this recommendable.

This book was very slow. It took a lot of energy to push through it. But it is the first one in the series so I understand a lot of information needed to be shared to show and introduce the setting, characters etc.

An unchallenging though entertaining read, I enjoyed the vanilla nature of this fantasy world (basically D&D). It allowed me to just jump right into the story instead of laboriously familiarizing myself to a more original setting.
