Thank you to Simon Teen and Turn the Page Tours for providing me a finished copy of this book in exchange of my honest opinion.

CW: Self-harm, anxiety, disordered eating (minor), child neglect/abuse (past), trauma/PTSD (traumatic experiences in past). None of the abuse or trauma is sexual in nature. Very brief suicide mention in the epilogue, concerning a character from the past who never appears in the book. (taken directly from the author)

Vespertine was an amazing read! I have read Margaret Rogerson’s first two books, and this one is so different from them and unique in its own way. I loved Artemisia because of how real she was. She has social anxiety and a traumatic past that still affects her. She doesn’t shy away from her flaws, but embraces them and learns to live with them, and that makes her a great character. To no one’s surprise, I really enjoyed the revenant and its journey with Artemisia. The author said that if you enjoyed Elisabeth and Silas’ dynamics you would enjoy Artemisia and the revenant, and she was so right. The whole plot was very interesting and I found this world fascinating! I did get lost sometimes with all the terminology, but it was mostly my fault. Rogerson was very descriptive when it came to the setting, and that transported you to dark hallways under cathedrals and haunting graveyards, among other places. I need another book set in this world, please, and thank you. If you loved An Enchantment of Ravens and Sorcery of Thorns, I believe you will fall in love with Vespertine as I did.

I read compulsively. I’ve finished nearly 100 books this year. Of all of those books (many of which were truly excellent), this may be my favorite.
The exposition for world building is incredibly seamless - it doesn’t slow the plot down, but it also gives you sufficient context. The dialogue (internal and external) is wonderfully written. The pacing of the plot is truly superb. I will absolutely be recommending this book to all of my friends. And my mom. And my partner. And my kids. Hell, dogs too, idgaf.

Sadly, I was not into this book at all. I listen to the audiobook and I thought it started out strong, but then it got confusion and I didn't understand anything that was going on and why. This is the second book I've read from this author (I didn't like Sorcery or Thorns), so I think it's time for me to throw in the towel and realize that I'm not just into her writing. I'm glad that there are many people who do, it's just not for me unfortunately.

Ouh, IMPECCABLE! That’s the word I’d use to describe this book 😌🤌
I don’t know why or what but something about this book just HIT. The writing, the atmosphere, the world building, the characters all HIT. This was such a vibe and I was HERE FOR IT. UGH, it was just such a SCRUMPTIOUS experience. I’m gonna need to shout out the writing one more time because I feel like that’s part of why I loved this book so much. ALL OF IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
I also have to shout out my peeps! Artemisia is MY GIRL 😤😤😤😤 And the revenant… Oh my God I love and adore and treasure the revenant 😭🙏🫶
Anyways, I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!
