Honestly, I would give it 3.5/5 stars. It's not exactly 4 stars for me, but I think it deserves more than 3.

I liked the book, although I didn't love it. I would still recommend it. The story is very interesting and maybe has a different spin than some other fantasy/heroine novels out now.

The lore is based in a religious context, similar to the hierarchy of Catholicism. The main character is a nun who has to save her world (of course), but the powers she gets are achieved in an interesting way. Powers are derived from "relics" that contain the spirit of a chaotic ghoulish entity, such as a Revenant, Ghoul, Ashgrim, Shade, etc. The nuns have to be able to control the spirit to receive the power, rather than work with the spirit.

I enjoyed the subtle hint of exploiting the Revenants and spirits for their power without asking for their consent. It made the reader feel more empathetic and understanding of those we sometimes don't think about.

Overall, it was a great adventure with good writing, but it didn't WOW me. I encourage you to read it! It was a good read; it didn't blow me out of the water, though.

BATTLE NUNS.

That's it, that's all it needs.

Honestly though, this book jumped into my top books so quickly. The worldbuilding was enjoyable, the magic system was the most unique thing I've seen in a long time and I'm genuinely so disappointed that this was a standalone book because I would devour any further books in this universe so quickly I'd be called a Revenant.

I really enjoyed the characters, Artemisia was a very likeable main character. Her snark and banter with the Revenant made me laugh multiple times and it felt genuine. The dialogue was never forced and you could see the bond between the characters growing naturally. You was rooting for them both the entire time. The supporting cast were also fantastic, but I'll keep their names to myself for the sake of spoilers.

If you like fantasy, religion and a little bit spooky all rolled into 1 you should put Vespertine on your shelf immediately you will not be disappointed.

Tbh I was not super following the plot of this book, and that’s on me. But I liked the religious fantasy and it was spooky and the characters were good
