Awwwwwww I loved Charity's story :)))
"An Unwelcome Suitor" is my favourite story by Newbold so I was very excited when it was announced that this should be the sequel (even though Goodreads doesn't show it).
Both Sydney and Charity are gossip victims. But that is not the most pressing and dangerous thing they have in common...
Generally this book was slightly darker and than the prequel (the danger of Charitys death was kinda too imminent... for me).
Adorable love story, very straight forward... :)
Not an obvious main evil character...
Main Characters: Clear Backgroundstory, Locigal Actions (not for her Brother?)
Side Charactes: Funny, Adorable Backgroundstory, Reoccuring (at least Dr. Pembrooke otherwise not i think...)
Writing Style: Very good
Content: Clean, just kissing
Violence: Little Bit Non Graphic
Would recommend: Yes, absolutely :)

This doesn't objectively deserve 2 stars but it took more over a month to read and also triggered a reading slump. It also made me finally admit that I don't suit Ashtyn Newbold's writing. I always get sucked in with amazing plot premises but I don't think I've ever read something that had measured up to my super high expectations. So I think it's time for me to finally bow out.
Like I mentioned the story is fine really, but the writing didn't grip me. Nothing felt super grounded or elicited any feeling from me - and I found it to be incredibly boring. The mystery itself was also really predictable and I found the romance to lack chemistry. The pacing also felt super off.
Anyway, this is definitely a case of it's me not you but I'm off the Newbold train I think.

I didn’t know this was going to be a mystery! I love regency and Victorian era mysteries. This one was not predictable and kept me guessing the whole way. I felt Sidney’s storyline wrapped up a little too abruptly, but otherwise loved the book.

Sweet, easy reading. Charity is ill, living alone in a huge house, and in fear for her life. Sidney is running from his past and in need of a refuge. Can these two help each other conquer the dangers that each are encountering?
This was an enjoyable story with a touch of mystery. I liked the fact that the two main characters don’t let silly misunderstandings trip them up or interfere with their growing sense of trust. Although, you do have to suspend a hefty amount of disbelief for some of the plot points! Including the fact that Sidney seems to drop from the heavens with the sole purpose of saving Charity, and his own backstory is quite vague. Since these two characters are all each other has for most of the novel, I did miss a little bit of the expansiveness that comes to a story when it moves around a bit more and has a more substantial supporting cast.
