This book was recommended to me as a fast paced page turner. I didn't quite feel that myself. There were a few twists that jumped out and I didn't quite guess the ending (I usually do), which was a good thing, until right near the end. I felt I got to know the main character quite well and the author brought the barren landscape to life for me; maybe I'll visit?
Definitely worth a read if you like barren, wild landscapes and a good crime story.

Too many descriptions. We lose track of the plot.
I picked this book on sale from Amazon, largely because I'm curious and interested in Scotland and its islands. The story takes place on the Isle of Lewis. It's a very different world from mine, and I found the life there interesting to read about.
There's a mystery here, or rather, a couple of mysteries. One concerns a murder. The other concerns things that happened in the past. The viewpoint shifts back and forth from present day to past rememberings.
I thought the writing was good. I got a bit annoyed about the main character, and I thought some of the angsty-bits went on a mite too long. But as a view of a different culture: +1.
Mostly liked it. Not sure I liked it well enough to read another book with the same characters, though. I'll let some time pass and see how I feel.

I started reading this book on Lewis and Harris, so my point of view might be altered indefinitely by the expansive, lonely bogs of Lewis and the breathtaking beaches and mountains of Harris. The sense of place was strong with this book, and I developed an understanding of the importance of traditions - such as the guga hunts of Ness. The mystery was slow paced, but believable. I would definitely consider reading the second book.

Un polar qui m'a tenu en haleine, et m'a emportée dans les brumes de Lewis, au grès des paysages magnifiquement décris par Peter May. Une très belle découverte !

I’m excited to be travelling to the Isle of Lewis in a couple of months which is the mysterious setting for this well crafted murder mystery, the first in a trilogy. The island is a central character in this story and I enjoyed learning more about the lifestyle and traditions of the people who may live there.
