This reminded me a lot of Winter’s Orbit in voice and tone. It was a cute and fun YA urban fantasy that felt very age appropriate for the market. Not something that felt shoehorned into YA. The characters were young and made sense to be and the adults were genuinely adults while also being complicated and interesting characters of their own. I also liked that both protagonists felt complete and complex. The tropes were there but the book didn’t depend on them.

I loved it!
This book has magic, evil magic dictators, powerful magic chaos bringers, a cat, found family, and some romance. It's very adorable and also a lot of fun.

I adore Antonia and all her cursed items, loved her from the first chapter. Love her reason for hiring Rook was to bring a little chaos and show her dislike for the Magical Consortium (which is fair). The way she and Rook grow is the found family I'm here for.

Rook and his Spell Binder is also so fun and interesting. Sun being grumpy about people and the weather is such a mood. I was here for Sun so the way. Instant bond with them for their dislike of heat and crowds.
Fable was the one I wasn't so sure I liked for a long time, but came to like and appreciate.

Okay, wow. This was an impulse read for me, as in, I saw it at my job, was drawn in by the cover and the synopsis sold it for me.
Found family, frenemies to lovers and magic in a modern setting where he main characters fight the establishment? Sign me up. I love how Sun’s and Fable’s identities were never questioned, attacked or made a big deal by the other characters. They’re there, use they/them pronouns and every character (even the villains of the story) respect them. It was actually nice to see queer rep without any homophobia or transphobia and have the conflict come from the other aspects of the story; I find it a breath of fresh air.
The characters are also very likeable and I enjoyed their interactions as the story progressed. If you like cheesy, young adult romances, it’ll definitely do the trick for you.
The only thing I have “against” it is the first person and pov switching, but they’re more of a personal thing for me. In this case I think it was actually played well, so in the overall scheme of the story, it worked well. Definitely recommend it for anyone who’d like a cheesy, modern-fantasy story to get into the spooky season mood.
