Look. This is a tough topic. And maybe this just isn’t a book that’s for me.

I was struck by the writer’s callous descriptions of terrible acts. Did I know going in that this was going to be a difficult read, yes. Did the tone of the book lead me to believe that the author has become numb to the atrocities, immensely so.  I was incredibly disappointed in the way he talked about women especially.

Oh my god. It doesn’t stop. The gas pedal is on the floor. This book has blown my mind. The clearest investigative journalism I’ve read.

Very interesting look at the darkness surrounding the CIA and bureaucracy in general. Makes me that much more distrustful of the government; although nothing shocks me. Further proof that most people in government and politics have personality disorders (i.e. Bugliosi).

A little dissatisfied with the end. I didn’t feel that Manson, Jack Ruby, and the LSD experiments were tied up in a neat bow; however, I think that’s the point. The author does mention the ambiguity. I don’t know that we will ever know and if we do find out, all guilty parties will be long gone that it won’t make a difference.

This book is for all the people who go down rabbit holes in history and find out everything bad or crazy is because of the CIA, and no, that isn't a exaggeration. The fact that I cannot listen to the Beach Boys in the same way again, whereupon I retired an old teddy bear of mine from my abuelita that sang in (now) ominous tones "God Only Knows", attests to the impact this book brought me. Although I'm pretty seasoned in different political and true crime areas, this really did bring in some new light/angles, and now I'm the person at parties who isn't surprised at much anymore. By about three-quarters of the book it can get a bit monotonous,  coupled with the author's own existential crisis in between facts, but definitely worth a read.

Also, my library keeps declining people to take out this book, and now I wonder if that's intentional. Who knows!
