I think this is one of those books that will stay with me and I will think about a lot!!
I wasn’t expecting it to hit as hard as it did. I think it shows how grief can be shared by a group of people but also be held in isolation. The resentment of how one person’s grief doesn’t match another’s and then the realisation that they have been going through the same process was done so well.

the writing seemed a little long winded to me and I struggled with that a lot.
I also strongly disliked the addition of magic, and the fact that the famous persons (shakespeare’s) wife was written to be extra special. if the magic had just been rumours that could have been really interesting though.

Ok I get it. I get why this is so beloved by so many. But it's not my favourite O'Farrell.

I have been a fan of hers for years, since a friend gifted me Instructions for a Heatwave years ago. I've since read 3 more of her novels.

Also, full disclosure, I have not actually read Hamlet or watched the movie. This novel does make me want to read it now though so there is that.

I personally found it just a teensy bit OTT in the dramatics, but of course, she is matching it to her subject. I like how she never names Shakespeare. It would have been distracting, instead she brings his character and life experiences to the fore.

Overall and excellent book and well worth the read.

Not so much plot driven but there is a twist that is interesting once you have worked it out - book for most of the read seems to follow development/experiences of the characters and the point of the plot is in the twist already mentioned - an interesting read

Absolutely love the imaginary life story of Hamnet (Hamlet)..."remember me".
