I remember being deeply touched by the true story of an old man and his continuing contact with a penguin - a story which made the rounds on social media, and is the basis for this picture book. The text and illustrations both do a beautiful job of transmitting such a powerful story for children. Both the penguin and he old man are lovingly rendered in watercolors. The moving tale is an excellent depiction of kindness, friendship, and dedication, along with imparting the importance of conservation for young readers. This penguin lover librarian can't wait to add it to my bookshelf and share it with kids.

This was a touching story about an old man who saves a penguin and establishes a lifelong relationship with the animal. Even though the animal leaves for part of the year, he always comes back. It really hit me in the feels when I found out this was based on a true story.

**I received this from NetGalley for an honest review. **

I absolutely loved this book! Even better that it is based off a true story. Julie did a wonderful job of crafting such a beautiful children's book. Another book I can't wait to get my hands on in the future.

Oh, what a darling book! I haven’t read too many children’s books tackling environmental topics in a clever, engaging way. Also, knowing the friendship between João and Dindim is real makes my heart squishy. I imagine it’d be enjoyable to read aloud, particularly for its rhymes. The Old Man and the Penguin could easily be introduced in a classroom setting, but also makes for a sweet bedtime story. 5 stars!

A rhyming story book about a friendship between a penguin and an old man. It is based on a true story. The illustrations are good. It also tells about the damages of oil spilling in the oceans.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
