I had a feeling that this one was
going to be very different. It gave us so much world building, character development, and insights into
characters that we weren't expecting it from. The author gave us everything we needed, and a little bit more. One of
my favorite things about TRC was seeing how different Dacre and Verena's relationship differed from bk.1 through bk.3. The way he loved her had me by the heartstrings. This was absolutely fantastic.

Wrapped up the ending of Dacre & Verena’s story with a nice little bow! Yes, this whole series does follow a certain formula, but it’s good fun. Really enjoyed seeing Verena’s character development in this one. I wish I had gotten a little more out of the final few chapters as far as the stakes go, but overall this was a great palette cleanser read and just the right length. It’s a bittersweet farewell to The Veiled Kingdom series!

I had to drag myself to the finish line for this and I’m quite sad about it.
I was very excited for the finale to this trilogy because I absolutely loved book 1, Veiled Kingdom, and while I thought book 2, Hunted Heir, was too short with nothing really relevant happening, I still enjoyed it.
Rivaled Crown, however, started out pretty strong. It immediately locked in my attention and I practically devoured the first 25% and then…it just dragged on and on and onnnnnn….
And to be honest, it was quite cringe.
Seriously, I was cringing most of the time that Dacre and Verena are talking to each other because it’s literally consistently extremely POETIC.
I swear no couple speaks like this ALL THE TIME, not even in fantasy books.
They rarely had any normal conversation. Every time they talk to each other, it’s like someone shoved down a poetry book down both their throats.
The ending was pretty anticlimactic. It’s weird that Dacre’s dad was redeemed when he’s basically President Coin from Hunger Games. It was weird.
I just really truly enjoyed the first quarter hence the 3 stars.
Oh and plus the spicy scenes are actually good. At least when they’re going to poundtown, they talk like normal people.

Maybe I would have like this more if I did not have to wait for its release after reading the first two. I just couldn’t get back into it. I felt like Verena’s learning of her powers could have been more fleshed out. I also didn’t buy that someone that majority of the rebellion suddenly stood beside her. I felt like the climax of Verena taking a stand against her father could’ve been more.
