As an adult reading "Avalon High," I think this book can be a little cheesy. However, Meg Cabot hasn't forgotten a thing about being a teenager and she write about them with humor and dignity. So my inner 15 year old loved this book with it's allusions to the King Arthur tales and its high school drama. And now, my inner 15 year old had so much fun that I'm considering watching "Footloose" and eating pounds of sour patch kids while giggling furiously the entire time.
I devoured this book multiple times in high school. It's a great story (I even once used it to write an AP English paper about King Arthur) and is a nice light read.
For some reason, I really enjoyed this book. I think it was because the whole book is based on around King Arthur, and that story always intrigued me. I found the character of Ellie relatable as a high school student myself. I am in no way saying that this is a literary work of art and worthy of excessive praise, but its a fun, easy read. I read this after a more heavy, dark book and its nice to have a contrast to it. This book is really good more for younger kids, like preteens because its easy to read and doesnt really deal with heavy topics. But really, if you're looking for a quick, easy read, i would recommend it to you.
MEG CABOT, ROMANCE
Meg Cabot's Avalon High is a fun take on Arthurian legend, where Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere and company are reborn in contemporary Washington, D.C. to battle the forces of darkness once more. So where does the new kid, Ellie Harrison, fit in? Dragged to D.C. from Minnesota--thanks to her medievalist professor parents' sabbatical--Ellie (named for Lancelot's wife, Elaine of Shallot, her mother's research obsession) hopes at the very least to find a small niche for herself at school. Imagine her surprise when Will (aka Arthur), the school's star quarterback, notices and befriends her on day one! Things start to go downhill, however, when Will's half-brother Marco (Mordred) decides that he's had enough of his brother. Will Ellie be the passive Elaine of Shallot, or can she choose to be something more to save her love? I'm not much for romance, and Cabot certainly has corny teen romance scenes down to an art. I mean, what girl wouldn't want to date King Arthur reincarnated as the hottest, most popular guy in school? At the same time, I love the Arthurian tradition and thought Ellie was a great "exceptionally acceptable" character with insecurities and guts.

Part of me wants to give this three stars just because I know that at one time I probably would have given it three stars. But let's be real. There are so many, much better books that you could be reading. That said, this isn't a horrible book--it's a fairly fun modern take on Arthurian legend and all that.
Is it predictable? Yes, yes it is. Is it horribly cheesy? Unfortunately, yes. But was it exactly what I wanted to read during Christmas Break? Actually, yes. As far as throw-away books ago, it was a nice brain numbing book. So yeah, not exactly a glowing review, and if you could avoid wasting time on this book, it'd probably be good for you. But as far as brain numbing goes, I wouldn't look down on you for reading this.

Good book, although the romance was a little cliché. I enjoyed rereading the book and overall I would rate it 4/5 stars
I liked the characters, especially Ellie and I don’t really blame her for wanting to stay in the pool all day, I mean who wouldn’t? Although it was a little cliché about the new girl catching the attention of the popular quarterback who has a cheerleader girlfriend. I can't even count how many books I've read with this plot...
However the fact that it was a modern retelling made up for the cliché, I loved the parallels between the story and the Arthurian legend, I only wish it was longer so that we could’ve had more of the Arthurian Legends.
It’s also a nice novel to reread and realise all the bits of foreshadowing that you missed for first time around. I would probably give then novel 4/5 stars, because even though it is cleverly written I felt like apart from Ellie and Will the other characters weren’t fleshed out enough and some characters were just stereotypes i.e. Jennifer. It would’ve been nice if we saw a bit more of Lance and Jen in the novel.
